Convert JPG to MP4

A video editor, social platform, presentation system, or playback device may accept MP4 video but reject still JPG images. Converting creates a timed video from one image or a slideshow from multiple images, with optional audio.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also written as JPEG, is a lossy raster-image format designed for photographs and other continuous-tone images. Digital cameras, smartphones, scanners, Photoshop, GIMP, and web browsers commonly create or use .jpg files. A JPG normally contains one still image; it has no timeline, frame rate, audio track, or video codec.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a multimedia container, not a video codec. It commonly contains H.264 video and may contain AAC audio, subtitles, and metadata. Phones, televisions, browsers, video editors, social platforms, and media players widely support MP4. Unlike JPG, an MP4 can store timed video frames, duration, frame rate, audio, and a defined display resolution.

How to convert one JPG

FFmpeg is a free desktop option for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Install it from the official FFmpeg download page, put the image in a working folder, open a terminal in that folder, and run:

ffmpeg -loop 1 -i input.jpg -t 10 -r 30 -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -vf "scale=trunc(iw/2)*2:trunc(ih/2)*2" -movflags +faststart output.mp4

Replace input.jpg and output.mp4 with the required filenames. Change -t 10 to set the duration in seconds. The command creates 30 frames per second from the same image; it does not add motion or detail. The scaling filter makes the width and height even, which avoids common H.264 encoding failures. yuv420p provides broad playback compatibility, and +faststart moves MP4 metadata near the beginning for faster web playback.

How to create a slideshow

Rename the images with continuous numbering, such as frame_001.jpg, frame_002.jpg, and frame_003.jpg, then run:

ffmpeg -framerate 1/5 -i frame_%03d.jpg -c:v libx264 -r 30 -pix_fmt yuv420p -vf "scale=trunc(iw/2)*2:trunc(ih/2)*2" -movflags +faststart slideshow.mp4

-framerate 1/5 displays each image for five seconds, while -r 30 produces a conventional 30 fps output. The pattern %03d matches three-digit numbers. Keep the sequence continuous; for irregular filenames, import the files into a timeline editor or create an FFmpeg concat list.

How to use desktop software

Shotcut and Kdenlive can import JPG files into a timeline, set each image's duration, add transitions, crop or pad images, add titles, and mix audio. In Shotcut, import the files, add them to the playlist and timeline, set the project resolution and frame rate, then choose Export → Default → Export File. Confirm that the export uses H.264 video in an MP4 container. A graphical editor is more practical than a command line when the slideshow needs varied durations, transitions, text, music, or reframing.

How to use an online converter

Upload one image or a numbered set, choose MP4, set the image duration and order when offered, start the conversion, and download the result. Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion cannot restore detail lost by JPG compression. Re-encoding the image into H.264 may add another generation of compression; for a high-quality output, add -crf 18 to the FFmpeg command, balancing quality against file size:

Match the project dimensions to the destination: 1920×1080 suits landscape HD video, while 1080×1920 suits vertical video. An image with a different aspect ratio may be cropped, stretched, or shown with black bars; choose crop or pad deliberately instead of distorting it. A converted JPG has no audio unless an audio file is added in an editor or with FFmpeg. For broad device support, use H.264 video, AAC audio when required, even pixel dimensions, and the yuv420p pixel format.
