Convert VGHD to MP4

Phones, browsers, editing applications, and many sharing services usually require a standard video such as MP4, while VGHD files are tied to the software or recorder that created them. The correct conversion method depends on whether the file comes from VirtuaGirlHD or a VGuard surveillance system.

What the VGHD format is

.vghd is not a single standardized video format. It is used for at least two unrelated types of proprietary content:

• VirtuaGirlHD: VirtuaGirlHD model video clips use VGHD files intended for playback by the VirtuaGirlHD application. They may use proprietary structures or encryption and are not normally readable by VLC, HandBrake, FFmpeg, or general-purpose online converters.
• VGuard CCTV: Some VGuard DVR and NVR systems use VGHD for exported or backed-up surveillance recordings. These files can include video, audio, timestamps, camera information, and recorder-specific metadata, with the exact structure varying by device and software version.

Check the file's source before choosing a tool. A VirtuaGirlHD file and a VGuard recording require different software; changing the filename extension does not convert either file.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a widely supported container for video and audio. H.264 video with AAC audio inside an MP4 file is compatible with most phones, browsers, televisions, media players, and editing applications.

MP4 is useful for sharing, uploading, editing, and ordinary playback, but it is not a replacement for the source file. An export can omit proprietary metadata, authentication information, multiple camera streams, or the original timestamp data.

How to convert a VGuard VGHD recording

1. Install the VGuard Smart Player or the exact playback and backup utility supplied for the DVR or NVR model.
2. Copy the VGHD file and any associated index or metadata files to a local drive. Keep an untouched copy of the original.
3. Open the recording in the VGuard software and use Export, Save as, or Backup.
4. Choose MP4 if the recorder software provides that option. If it exports only AVI or another standard format, save that file first and convert the export.
5. Open the result in VLC or MediaInfo and verify its duration, audio, resolution, orientation, and visible timestamp before deleting intermediate files.

The recorder-specific exporter is the preferred method because it understands the VGHD structure and can preserve the on-screen time display. Menus and supported output formats differ between VGuard models, so a utility for another model may not open the file.

How to encode an exported video

HandBrake can convert an exported AVI or other standard video. Open the file, choose Fast 1080p30 or Fast 720p30 according to the source resolution, select MP4, and start the encode. The preset may change the frame rate or dimensions, so inspect those settings when preserving surveillance evidence matters.

FFmpeg provides more control:

ffmpeg -i exported.avi -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -c:a aac -b:a 192k converted.mp4

Replace exported.avi with the actual filename. CRF 18 retains high visual quality; values from 20 to 23 generally create smaller files with more compression. If the source contains no audio, use -an instead of the audio options.

What to do with a VirtuaGirlHD file

VirtuaGirlHD does not provide a general-purpose VGHD-to-MP4 conversion path through standard video software. Open the file in the installed VirtuaGirlHD application and check for an official Export, Save video, or recording function. If no supported export exists, do not expect VLC, HandBrake, FFmpeg, or an online converter to decode the file.

As a last resort, record the application's playback with OBS Studio, provided you have the right to make that copy. Set Settings → Output → Recording to MKV, capture the playback window at its native size, stop the recording, then use File → Remux Recordings to create an MP4. Screen capture can reduce quality, omit original metadata, alter timing, and include interface elements; it is not a direct conversion.

Online converters and limitations

CloudConvert and Zamzar can be considered for an ordinary AVI, MOV, or other standard export after the proprietary software has produced it. They generally cannot decode VGHD itself. Do not upload private CCTV footage or copyrighted material to an online service unless you have permission and accept the service's storage and privacy terms.

Converting an exported AVI to MP4 normally requires re-encoding and may introduce another generation of quality loss. Keep the original VGHD file, the recorder's exported source, and the final MP4. MP4 conversion cannot restore detail, audio, timestamps, or metadata that the original export did not contain.
