Free online TREC to MP4 converter

Screen recordings saved by Camtasia may need to be delivered as MP4 for upload to a video platform, playback in a browser or media player, or import into an editor that cannot read .trec. MP4 is also the practical format for sharing a finished recording without requiring TechSmith software.

What the TREC format is

.trec is TechSmith’s proprietary recording format, primarily used by Camtasia Recorder for screen captures. A TREC recording can include captured screen video, webcam video, microphone audio, system audio, cursor data, and capture metadata.

TREC is designed for use in Camtasia rather than general playback. The recording may be imported into a Camtasia project for trimming, cursor effects, audio adjustment, captions, and other edits before export. Project-only elements such as annotations, callouts, markers, quizzes, and timeline edits are stored in the Camtasia project, not recreated from an exported MP4.

The .trec extension can also be used by unrelated software. Treat a file as a Camtasia recording only if Camtasia or the converter can identify it successfully.

What the MP4 format is

MP4 is a standard multimedia container supported by browsers, phones, media players, video platforms, presentation software, and most video editors. For the broadest compatibility, use an MP4 containing H.264 video and AAC audio.

An MP4 export is a rendered, flattened video. It preserves the visible result and mixed audio, but it does not preserve editable source tracks, cursor metadata, Camtasia project structure, or interactive Camtasia features.

Convert a TREC file to MP4

To convert without installing software, upload the .trec file to the converter on 101convert.com, select MP4 as the output format, start the conversion, and download the finished file. Keep the original TREC file until the MP4 has been checked for complete video, audio, and synchronization.

Upload conversion is suitable for recordings that do not need editing. Do not upload recordings containing credentials, personal information, confidential screens, or restricted business material; use Camtasia locally instead.

Export with Camtasia

1. Open Camtasia and import the recording with File → Import → Media, or drag the .trec file into the Media Bin.
2. Add the recording to the timeline. Trim unwanted material and make any required audio, cursor, webcam, caption, or visual edits before exporting.
3. Set the canvas dimensions to the intended delivery size. Do not enlarge a lower-resolution screen capture merely to produce a larger MP4.
4. Select Export → Local File. Older Camtasia releases may use Share → Local File or File → Produce and Share.
5. Select MP4 output and, where available, choose H.264 video with AAC audio. Retain the source frame rate and resolution unless a target platform requires different settings.
6. Export to a filename such as recording.mp4, then test the beginning and end of the file, speech synchronization, small text, cursor movement, and any webcam overlay.

If Camtasia reports that the recording is unsupported, install or use the Camtasia version that created it, or a newer compatible version. A damaged or incomplete TREC file may not be recoverable through conversion.

Quality and compatibility limits

• MP4 export normally uses lossy compression. Fine screen text, code, spreadsheets, and interface details can become blurred or blocky at low quality settings.
• Keep the source dimensions and frame rate when possible. Upscaling does not add detail, and frame-rate conversion can make cursor movement or animations less smooth.
• Use a higher-quality Camtasia export when text must remain readable at full-screen size or when the MP4 will be edited again.
• H.264/AAC MP4 has wider device and browser support than H.265/HEVC MP4. A device may support the MP4 extension while failing to decode a less common video or audio codec inside it.
• Keep the original .trec file and any Camtasia project if future editing is possible. Separate captured sources and editable project work cannot be restored from the exported MP4.
