A TREC recording may need conversion when a legacy DivX player, television, or editing application cannot open Camtasia’s native recording format. Converting it also produces a more widely playable video for distribution or archival use.

What the TREC format is

TREC is TechSmith Camtasia’s native screen-recording format. Camtasia creates it when recording a screen, webcam, microphone, or system audio, and it can preserve recording information such as cursor activity and separate media tracks for editing. TREC files commonly come from Camtasia projects or screen captures and are not intended as general-purpose playback files.

What the DIVX format is

DIVX is a video format based on MPEG-4 Part 2 encoding, commonly packaged with MP3 audio in an AVI-compatible file. It was designed for compact files and playback on DivX-certified software, DVD players, televisions, and other older consumer devices. Choose it when the target player specifically requires DivX; H.264 or H.265 in MP4 is usually a better choice for modern devices.

How to convert TREC to DIVX

Using the built-in online converter

  1. Open the TREC-to-DIVX converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .trec file and select DIVX as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion, then download the resulting file after processing finishes.

This route requires no locally installed conversion software. Large recordings can take longer to upload and process, and the downloaded file should be tested on the intended player.

Using Camtasia and FFmpeg

When direct TREC processing is unavailable, first decode the recording with Camtasia, then encode the exported video as DivX:

  1. Open the TREC file in Camtasia.
  2. Choose Export → Local File or the equivalent local export command, select MP4, and export the recording as recording.mp4.
  3. Install an FFmpeg build that includes the native MPEG-4 Part 2 encoder and run:

ffmpeg -i recording.mp4 -c:v mpeg4 -vtag DX50 -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k -f avi recording.divx

The DX50 tag identifies the video as a DivX-compatible MPEG-4 Part 2 stream, while MP3 audio and AVI packaging improve compatibility with older DivX hardware. Use a larger -q:v value for a smaller, lower-quality file or a smaller value for higher quality; the exact result depends on the source resolution and motion.

Quality and compatibility limits

Exporting from Camtasia and re-encoding introduces a second generation of compression, so retain the original TREC file and export from it rather than repeatedly converting an already compressed video. TREC-specific editing data, cursor effects that were not rendered during export, captions stored as editable project elements, and separate track controls may not survive the MP4 and DivX stages.

DivX support is less consistent on current software than MP4 support. Test the output with the exact television, player, or application that will use it; if it rejects the .divx extension, try an AVI filename such as recording.avi without changing the encoded streams. Very high resolutions, variable frame rates, or unsupported audio settings can also cause problems on older certified players.
