IFV files are often legacy video recordings that newer players and editors cannot open, while DIVX provides a more widely supported MPEG-4 video file for playback and sharing. Conversion is useful when a device or application accepts DivX video but not the original IFV encoding.

What the IFV format is

In the Video category, IFV generally refers to an Indeo video file using Intel's legacy Indeo codec family. IFV files are encountered in older Windows software, multimedia titles, archived recordings, and applications that stored video with an .ifv extension.

IFV is not a modern, broadly supported container. Current players may lack the required Indeo decoder, and some files use application-specific headers or packaging. The exact codec should be checked rather than inferred from the extension.

What the DIVX format is

DIVX commonly identifies an AVI-based video encoded with the DivX implementation of MPEG-4 Part 2. It is intended for playback on software players, older televisions, set-top players, and other devices that support DivX-compatible AVI files.

DivX can provide much smaller files than uncompressed or lightly compressed legacy video while retaining practical compatibility. For the broadest playback support, use AVI, MPEG-4 Part 2 video, MP3 audio, and a .divx filename.

How to convert IFV to DIVX

FFmpeg is the most direct desktop method when the installed build can decode the IFV file.

  1. Install a current FFmpeg build and place the source file in a working folder.
  2. Inspect the file with ffprobe input.ifv. Confirm that FFmpeg detects a video stream and identify its frame rate, dimensions, and audio stream.
  3. Encode an AVI-compatible DivX-style file with:
ffmpeg -i input.ifv -c:v mpeg4 -vtag DIVX -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k output.divx

The mpeg4 encoder creates MPEG-4 Part 2 video, -vtag DIVX writes the DivX four-character code, and -q:v 4 selects quality-based video encoding. Use a smaller value such as 2 for higher quality and larger files, or a larger value such as 6 for smaller files. If the source has no audio, omit -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k.

For a fixed video bitrate, replace the quality setting with a bitrate, for example:

ffmpeg -i input.ifv -c:v mpeg4 -vtag DIVX -b:v 1500k -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k output.divx

Check the result with ffprobe output.divx or test it in the target player. On 101convert.com, you can also convert the file online for free without installing software.

Compatibility and limitations

FFmpeg may report that an IFV file has an unknown format or unsupported codec. In that case, use the original IFV playback or authoring software to export the video to an intermediate AVI, MPEG-4, or uncompressed file, then run the FFmpeg command on that exported file. Renaming .ifv to .divx does not convert the video.

Conversion re-encodes the video and can reduce quality; it cannot restore detail already lost in the IFV source. Keep the original file as the archive copy. If the destination device is old, avoid unusual frame rates, use MP3 audio, and keep the output dimensions and frame rate unchanged unless the device documents stricter limits.
