What the IFV format is
IFV is a proprietary video format used by some DVR, NVR, CCTV camera, and surveillance-management systems. The exact container and codec depend on the manufacturer, so files with the .ifv extension are not guaranteed to be mutually compatible.
IFV recordings are commonly encountered after exporting footage from a security recorder or removing a storage device from a surveillance system. The associated vendor player may be required to decode the file, and some exports include a separate player or metadata file.
What the MPEG format is
MPEG normally refers to a family of standards rather than one exact file type. For ordinary video conversion, MPEG-2 in an MPG program stream is the most practical target because it is supported by many televisions, DVD-era tools, media players, and video editors. MPEG-1 provides wider support but generally needs more bitrate for comparable quality.
MPEG is preferable when the recipient cannot install the IFV manufacturer’s player or when footage must be imported into software that does not recognize proprietary surveillance formats.
How to convert IFV to MPEG
Using 101convert
- Open the free converter on 101convert.com.
- Upload the
.ifvrecording. - Select MPEG, preferably MPEG-2 or MPG if the site provides separate output choices.
- Start the conversion and download the resulting file after processing.
This method requires no software installation, but an IFV file that uses a vendor-specific codec may be rejected or produce no usable video. Preserve the original recording, especially when it may be evidence.
Using FFmpeg
First inspect the file to determine whether FFmpeg can read its container and codec:
ffprobe input.ifv
If FFmpeg detects a video stream, create a broadly compatible MPEG-2 file with:
ffmpeg -i input.ifv -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 3 -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f mpeg output.mpg
For an MPEG-1 output intended for older playback hardware, use:
ffmpeg -i input.ifv -c:v mpeg1video -q:v 2 -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f mpeg output.mpg
If the source has no audio, omit the audio options and use -an. If ffprobe reports an unknown format or codec, FFmpeg cannot perform a direct conversion; open the recording in the originating surveillance application and use Export, Save as, or Convert to create AVI, MP4, or MPEG first.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Converting to MPEG re-encodes the video unless the source already contains a compatible MPEG stream, so repeated conversions can reduce detail and introduce block artifacts. Use the highest available source quality and avoid converting an already compressed export.
Surveillance exports may contain variable frame rates, timestamp overlays, multiple camera channels, or proprietary audio. A generic converter may preserve only the visible video stream and discard event metadata, authentication data, GPS information, or the recorder’s timestamp index. Keep the original IFV file and export any required player or log files with it.
For legal or evidentiary footage, verify the converted file against the original and record the conversion software, date, output settings, and file hashes. MPEG output may also change aspect ratio or deinterlace interlaced CCTV footage unless those options are configured explicitly.
