Older Windows software and video devices may produce IFV files that modern editors and players cannot open. Converting them to an AVI file containing Xvid video can improve compatibility with legacy media players, editing software, and hardware that supports MPEG-4 Part 2.
What the IFV format is
In video applications, IFV generally refers to an older Intel Indeo video file or a file using an Indeo-based video stream. It is encountered in legacy Windows screen-capture, multimedia, game, and video-editing software that used Intel Indeo codecs. The extension is not a reliable description of the internal container: some capture and surveillance products also use IFV for proprietary video files.
Because Indeo codecs are obsolete, current operating systems may lack the decoder required to open an IFV file. Conversion software must first be able to decode the particular IFV variant; changing the filename extension cannot perform the conversion.
What the Xvid format is
Xvid is an implementation of the MPEG-4 Part 2 video codec, not a complete container format. Xvid video is commonly stored in an .avi file with MP3 or uncompressed PCM audio. It was designed for relatively small files and broad compatibility with older media players, DVD players, televisions, and editing programs.
Xvid is useful when the target device specifically supports MPEG-4 ASP or when an older AVI-based workflow is required. It is less suitable than H.264 or newer codecs for modern streaming and high-resolution archiving because it generally needs more bitrate for comparable quality.
How to actually convert IFV to Xvid
Using FFmpeg
- Install a current FFmpeg build that includes the
libxvidencoder, then open a terminal in the folder containing the source file. - Test whether FFmpeg recognizes the file with
ffmpeg -i input.ifv. If it reports an unknown format or cannot decode the video stream, this IFV variant requires the original capture software or a legacy decoder. - Convert the video to Xvid in an AVI container with
ffmpeg -i input.ifv -c:v libxvid -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k output.avi. - Check
output.aviin the target player. Use-q:v 3or-q:v 2for higher quality and larger output, or values from 5 to 7 for smaller files with more visible compression.
For a fixed bitrate instead of quality-based encoding, use -b:v 1500k in place of -q:v 4. If the source has no audio, omit the audio options and use ffmpeg -i input.ifv -c:v libxvid -q:v 4 -an output.avi.
Using 101convert
You can convert the file on the 101convert.com website for free without installing software. Upload the IFV file, select Xvid or AVI with Xvid video when that output option is available, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. If the service rejects the file, the IFV is probably a proprietary variant or uses a decoder unavailable to the converter.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
This conversion normally involves re-encoding, so it cannot restore detail already lost in the IFV source. Keep the original file for archival use and inspect the output for interlacing, audio synchronization, and unsupported frame dimensions.
Use ffprobe output.avi or a media-information tool to confirm that the video codec is Xvid and the container is AVI. An output file named .xvid is not automatically Xvid-encoded; the codec metadata must identify MPEG-4 Part 2/Xvid.
If FFmpeg cannot read the source, open it with the software or device utility that created it and export to an intermediate format such as lossless AVI or a broadly supported video file. Then encode that intermediate file with libxvid. Renaming input.ifv to input.avi only changes the filename and does not add a decoder or alter the video stream.
