Older DVD players, media boxes, and editing applications may accept Xvid video in an AVI file but reject camcorder MOD files. Converting the MPEG-2 video inside a MOD recording to Xvid can improve compatibility and often reduces the file size.

What the MOD format is

In video workflows, MOD is a camcorder filename extension used mainly by JVC Everio and some Panasonic and Canon standard-definition cameras. The file normally contains MPEG-2 video and MPEG-1 Layer II or Dolby Digital audio in an MPEG program stream; the extension identifies the camera recording rather than a distinct video codec.

MOD files commonly appear after copying recordings from a camcorder memory card or hard drive. Some software detects them directly, while older applications may require a copy renamed from recording.MOD to recording.MPG; renaming changes only the extension and does not convert the video.

What the XVID format is

Xvid is an MPEG-4 Part 2 video codec, not a container format. Xvid video is commonly stored in an .AVI container with MP3 audio because older standalone players and Windows applications support that combination.

Xvid is useful when the destination device specifically lists MPEG-4 ASP or Xvid/AVI support. It can provide smaller files than the original MPEG-2 recording at comparable viewing quality, but it is an older codec and should not be selected for devices that require H.264, HEVC, or another modern format.

How to actually convert MOD to Xvid

Using 101convert.com

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Choose the video conversion tool, upload the MOD file, select Xvid or AVI with Xvid video if that option is available, start the conversion, and download the resulting AVI file. Check the output details before transferring it to a player because some devices require a specific audio codec, resolution, or frame rate in addition to Xvid.

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg gives control over the codec, bitrate, audio format, and container. Confirm that your build includes the Xvid encoder, usually named libxvid, then run:

ffmpeg -i "input.MOD" -c:v libxvid -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k "output.avi"

The -q:v 4 setting uses Xvid's quality-based encoding; lower values generally produce higher quality and larger files. Values around 3–5 are a practical starting range. Replace libmp3lame with another available MP3 encoder if the FFmpeg build does not include it.

MOD footage from consumer camcorders is often interlaced. For progressive playback on computers and modern displays, deinterlace during conversion:

ffmpeg -i "input.MOD" -vf yadif -c:v libxvid -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k "output.avi"

For a graphical workflow, Avidemux can open many MOD files: use File → Open, set Video Output to an Xvid or MPEG-4 ASP encoder, set Audio Output to MP3, choose Output Format → AVI Muxer, then use File → Save. Encoder names and availability depend on the installed Avidemux build.

Quality and compatibility considerations

Conversion from MPEG-2 to Xvid is a lossy re-encode, so keep the original MOD files for archival use. Do not upscale the source; retain its original dimensions and frame rate unless the target device specifies different values.

MOD recordings may contain a 16:9 picture stored in a 4:3 frame with display-aspect metadata. If the converted AVI appears stretched or squashed, specify the intended aspect ratio explicitly, for example -aspect 16:9 or -aspect 4:3.

Older hardware may require Xvid in AVI with MP3 audio, constant frame rate, and a modest resolution or bitrate. If the device rejects the result, inspect its specification for supported MPEG-4 ASP profile, packed B-frames, audio codec, maximum resolution, and file-size limits; changing the filename extension will not resolve a codec or container incompatibility.
