What the RM format is
RM is a RealMedia container developed by RealNetworks for streaming and storing compressed video and audio. RM files commonly contain RealVideo and RealAudio streams and were created or distributed through RealPlayer, RealProducer, and older RealNetworks publishing tools. You may encounter them in archived internet videos, legacy training media, and recordings downloaded from websites that used RealMedia streaming.
What the Xvid format is
Xvid is an MPEG-4 Part 2 video codec, not normally a container by itself. Xvid video is most commonly stored in an .avi file with MP3 audio. It provides much broader compatibility with older televisions, DVD players, media players, and video-editing applications than many obsolete RealVideo codecs, but it is less efficient and less widely supported than H.264 or newer codecs.
How to actually convert RM to Xvid
Using FFmpeg
FFmpeg can decode many RealMedia files and encode the video with its Xvid-compatible libxvid encoder.
- Install an FFmpeg build that includes
libxvidand, preferably,libmp3lame. - Place the RM file in an accessible folder and open a terminal in that folder.
- Run:
ffmpeg -i input.rm -c:v libxvid -q:v 4 -vf format=yuv420p -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k output.avi
Replace input.rm with the source filename. The -q:v 4 setting uses quality-based video encoding; lower values produce higher quality and larger files. Use -q:v 3 for better quality or -q:v 6 for a smaller file. The yuv420p pixel format improves compatibility with older AVI hardware and software.
If the source has no audio, use -an instead of the audio options. If FFmpeg reports that libxvid is unavailable, install a build with that encoder or use a desktop converter that explicitly lists Xvid as an output codec.
Converting without installing software
You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software: upload the RM file, select Xvid or AVI with Xvid video if that output option is shown, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Avoid uploading copyrighted or confidential videos to any online service.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Conversion requires decoding the original RealVideo stream and re-encoding it, so it cannot restore detail already lost through RM compression. Keep the original resolution and frame rate unless the destination device requires different settings. Xvid output is usually safest as AVI with MP3 audio, but some modern players may not support either Xvid or AVI; H.264 in an MP4 container is generally a better choice for current devices.
Old RM files may use RealVideo variants that are unsupported by a particular FFmpeg build. A damaged file, encrypted stream, or file containing only a RealAudio track may fail or produce video without sound. Check the output by playing it from start to finish, especially after seeking or near the end of the file.
