What the RM format is
RM is the RealMedia container developed by RealNetworks. Video RM files commonly contain RealVideo streams such as RV30, RV40, or older RealVideo codecs, with RealAudio used for sound. RealPlayer, RealProducer, Helix tools, and older streaming-authoring software created RM files; websites, archived broadcasts, and downloaded media from the late 1990s and 2000s are common sources.
What the MJPG format is
MJPG is Motion JPEG: a video made from independent JPEG-compressed frames. Each frame can be decoded separately, which suits simple editors, capture hardware, scientific or industrial imaging, and software that does not support inter-frame codecs. MJPEG is easy to seek and edit, but it normally produces larger files than H.264 or modern codecs at comparable visual quality.
A file ending in .mjpg generally contains a raw MJPEG video stream rather than a conventional audio-video container. Because the format does not provide a normal audio track, conversion to MJPG commonly discards RM audio. Use an AVI or another container with the MJPEG video codec if audio must be retained.
How to actually convert RM to MJPG
FFmpeg is the most dependable desktop option for RM files. Install a current FFmpeg build, open a terminal in the folder containing the source, and run:
ffmpeg -i input.rm -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -an output.mjpg
Here, -c:v mjpeg selects Motion JPEG encoding, -q:v 3 requests high visual quality, and -an removes audio because raw MJPG output does not carry it. Replace input.rm with the actual filename; quote paths containing spaces, for example ffmpeg -i "old video.rm" -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -an "converted.mjpg".
Use a larger quality number for a smaller file and lower quality, or a smaller number for better quality and a larger file. A practical range is -q:v 2 through -q:v 5. To preserve a particular frame rate or size, add options such as -r 25 or -vf scale=1280:-2:
ffmpeg -i input.rm -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -r 25 -vf scale=1280:-2 -an output.mjpg
For a graphical workflow, open the RM file in a desktop converter that uses FFmpeg, choose MJPEG as the video codec, select a raw .mjpg output when available, set quality, and start the conversion. You can also convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
The conversion decodes the original RealVideo and re-encodes every frame as JPEG, so it is lossy and cannot restore detail already lost in the RM source. MJPEG usually requires substantially more storage than the original RM; check the output size before converting an archive in bulk.
Some applications expect MJPEG inside an AVI container rather than a raw .mjpg stream. For that case, use:
ffmpeg -i input.rm -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.avi
This version keeps audio by converting it to uncompressed PCM, but the resulting AVI can be much larger. If FFmpeg reports an unsupported or damaged RealVideo stream, try a current build and verify that the RM file plays correctly before conversion; DRM-protected or incomplete files may not be decodable.
