Older RM videos often fail to open in Blu-ray authoring software, AVCHD players, and editing applications that expect MPEG transport streams. Converting them to M2TS makes the video usable in those workflows, but usually requires re-encoding because RealVideo codecs are not normally suitable for M2TS output.

What the RM format is

RM, or RealMedia, is a multimedia container developed by RealNetworks for streamed and downloaded video. It commonly contains RealVideo video and RealAudio audio, although some files use other codecs supported by RealPlayer. RM files were widespread in older web video, internet broadcasts, and videos created or distributed with RealNetworks software such as RealPlayer and RealProducer.

What the M2TS format is

M2TS is a transport-stream container used by Blu-ray discs, AVCHD camcorders, and some video playback devices. It can carry MPEG-2, H.264/AVC, or VC-1 video with audio such as AC-3, AAC, or MPEG audio. Compared with RM, M2TS has much broader hardware and editing-software support, especially for high-definition video and disc-authoring workflows.

How to convert RM to M2TS

For a no-install conversion, use the converter on 101convert.com: upload the RM file, select M2TS as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Processing and available file-size limits depend on the website.

For local conversion, FFmpeg provides more control and can report decoding problems clearly:

ffprobe input.rm
ffmpeg -i input.rm -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a ac3 -b:a 192k -ar 48000 -f mpegts -mpegts_m2ts_mode 1 output.m2ts
  • Replace input.rm with the source filename and output.m2ts with the desired output name.
  • -crf 20 targets good H.264 quality; use a higher value for a smaller file and a lower value for less compression.
  • -mpegts_m2ts_mode 1 enables 192-byte M2TS packet formatting instead of ordinary 188-byte MPEG-TS packets.
  • The optional audio mapping, written as -map 0:a:0?, allows conversion of files that contain no audio.

If FFmpeg cannot decode the RealVideo stream, open the file in a current VLC or compatible media player and export it through Media → Convert/Save, or use a current desktop transcoder with RealMedia decoding support. Software that can merely play an RM file may still lack an encoder or may produce only MPEG-TS rather than Blu-ray-compliant M2TS.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion cannot restore detail already lost through RM compression. Re-encoding to H.264 introduces another generation of quality loss, so retain the original RM file for archival use and avoid repeated conversions.

A file named .m2ts is not automatically Blu-ray-compliant. Strict authoring may require specific H.264 level, frame rate, resolution, GOP structure, audio format, bitrate, and playlist metadata; use dedicated Blu-ray or AVCHD authoring software if the output must be written to a standards-compliant disc. Test the converted file on the intended player because some devices accept M2TS only with particular codecs and resolutions.
