Some older video archives and RealPlayer recordings are stored as RM files, while phones, messaging apps, and mobile-video software may require the 3GPP container. Converting the file requires decoding its RealVideo or RealAudio streams and encoding them with codecs that 3GP players support.
What the RM format is
RM, or RealMedia, is a multimedia container developed by RealNetworks for internet streaming and downloaded audio-video files. An RM file commonly contains RealVideo and RealAudio streams and may be identified by the .rm extension; related RealMedia files can also use .rmvb for variable-bitrate video.
RealPlayer and older RealNetworks Helix software created and played these files. RM files are often found in legacy media libraries, archived streaming content, older educational recordings, and downloads from websites that used RealMedia delivery. Modern operating systems and media players may not decode every RealVideo or RealAudio variant without FFmpeg-based support.
What the 3GPP format is
3GPP is a multimedia container normally saved with the .3gp extension. It was designed for mobile networks and early mobile phones, so it commonly stores compact video and audio at resolutions and bit rates suitable for limited storage and bandwidth.
3GP can contain codecs such as H.263, MPEG-4 Part 2, H.264, AAC, and AMR, although individual phones support only specific combinations. H.264 with AAC is suitable for many newer players; H.263 with AMR-NB provides broader compatibility with older 3G phones.
How to convert RM to 3GPP
FFmpeg is the most flexible desktop method because it can read many RealMedia variants and explicitly set the video, audio, resolution, and compatibility settings.
- Install an FFmpeg build that includes the RM demuxer and the encoders required for your target device.
- Inspect the source streams with
ffprobe -hide_banner input.rm. Record the duration, frame size, frame rate, and whether the file contains video, audio, or both. - For current phones and general playback, transcode to H.264 video and AAC audio with:
ffmpeg -i input.rm -c:v libx264 -profile:v baseline -level 3.0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -ar 44100 -ac 2 -b:a 96k output.3gp - For an older handset that specifically requires H.263 and AMR-NB, use a low mobile resolution and the AMR encoder available in your FFmpeg build:
ffmpeg -i input.rm -c:v h263 -b:v 384k -s 176x144 -r 15 -c:a libopencore_amrnb -ar 8000 -ac 1 -b:a 12.2k output.3gp - Play
output.3gpon the intended device or application. If it rejects H.264/AAC, use the H.263/AMR-NB variant or lower the frame size and bit rate.
You can also convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: select the video conversion tool, upload the RM file, choose 3GPP or .3gp as the output, start the conversion, and download the result.
Quality and compatibility limits
This conversion normally re-encodes both streams, so it can reduce detail and introduce audio or video artifacts. Do not use stream copying with -c copy as a general solution: RealVideo and RealAudio streams are usually not valid for the target device, and their codecs may not be accepted by the 3GP muxer.
Use the smallest resolution required by the playback device. A 176×144 frame and 15 frames per second suit many legacy 3G phones, while modern devices can usually handle larger H.264 video. Some RM files contain unsupported, damaged, encrypted, or proprietary RealMedia streams; FFmpeg may fail to decode these, in which case playback or export through an older RealPlayer-compatible application may be necessary before conversion.
