Free online DIVX to 3GPP converter

Some older phones, MMS systems, and mobile video players accept 3GPP files but cannot open DivX-encoded AVI or DIVX files. Converting to .3gp changes both the container and usually the video and audio codecs to settings those devices support.

What the DIVX format is

DivX is an MPEG-4 Part 2 video codec and media format associated with the DivX software ecosystem. DivX video is commonly stored in .avi files, although files using the .divx extension may contain DivX Media Format features such as menus, multiple audio tracks, or subtitles.

You may encounter these files in older video libraries, downloads, DVD-to-file conversions, and exports from applications such as DivX Converter or VirtualDub configured with a DivX codec. The extension alone does not guarantee a specific audio codec or resolution, so inspect the source before choosing output settings.

What the 3GPP format is

3GPP is a mobile multimedia container usually identified by .3gp. It was designed for cellular networks and early mobile phones, with support commonly including H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 2 video and AMR-NB or AAC audio.

3GP files generally use lower resolutions, frame rates, and bitrates than desktop video, which reduces file size and bandwidth requirements. Use this format when a target phone, legacy player, MMS workflow, or mobile application specifically requires 3GP; newer devices usually support MP4 more reliably.

How to convert DIVX to 3GPP

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is suitable when you need reproducible settings or batch conversion. Install a build that includes the required demuxers and encoders, then run:

This command reads the DivX input, encodes MPEG-4 Part 2 video, scales it to a maximum width of 320 pixels while preserving aspect ratio, limits playback to 15 frames per second, and creates low-bitrate mono AAC audio. Replace input.divx and output.3gp with the actual filenames.

For a device that explicitly requires H.263 video, use:

ffmpeg -i input.divx -c:v h263 -vf scale=176:144 -r 15 -b:v 150k -c:a aac -ar 8000 -ac 1 -b:a 24k output.3gp

Some very old phones require AMR-NB rather than AAC. If your FFmpeg build provides an AMR encoder, select it with the encoder name reported by ffmpeg -encoders; otherwise use a desktop converter that exposes an AMR-NB audio option. The target device's specification determines whether MPEG-4/AAC or H.263/AMR is required.

Using a desktop converter

Open the file in a converter that supports DivX input and 3GPP output, choose Output format → 3GPP, and select a device preset only if it matches the destination phone. Set a small resolution such as 176×144 or 320×240, 10–15 fps, a video bitrate between 150 and 500 kbit/s, mono audio at 8 kHz, and a low audio bitrate. Choose Export or Convert, then test the resulting .3gp file on the target device.

Quality and compatibility limits

Check the source with FFmpeg or MediaInfo before converting. A file with high resolution, variable frame rate, multiple audio tracks, or subtitles may need manual selection; FFmpeg uses the first suitable streams unless you specify options such as -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0.

3GP compatibility varies substantially among phones. A file may have the correct extension but still fail because its codec profile, resolution, bitrate, audio format, or maximum file size is unsupported. If playback fails, reduce the resolution and bitrate first, then try H.263 video with AMR-NB audio according to the device manual.
