Older VivoActive video files may not open in current players or editing software, while phones and legacy mobile systems often expect .3gp files. Converting the video can make it usable on 3GPP-compatible devices and easier to archive in a broadly supported container.

What the VIV format is

In the Video category, .viv usually identifies VivoActive video, a legacy streaming format developed for web playback by Vivo Software and later associated with RealNetworks-era media tools. VivoActive Encoder and related authoring software created these files; old websites, downloaded media collections, and archived presentations are common sources.

VIV is not a modern general-purpose editing format. Current media players and editors may lack its decoder, so conversion can require software that still recognizes the VivoActive stream or a dedicated online converter.

What the 3GPP format is

.3gp is the filename extension normally used for the 3GPP multimedia container. It was designed for mobile networks and early phones, commonly storing H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 2 video with AMR-NB or AAC audio.

3GPP files are useful when a legacy handset, mobile messaging system, embedded player, or older video application specifically requires .3gp. The format generally produces smaller files than archival formats, but its low-resolution, low-bitrate encoding is not suitable for preserving maximum source quality.

How to convert VIV to 3GPP

Use the built-in online converter

  1. Open the VIV converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Choose the source file with the .viv extension.
  3. Select 3GPP or .3gp as the output format.
  4. Start the conversion and download the resulting .3gp file when processing finishes.

This is the practical option when the local media player cannot decode VIV and no compatible legacy VivoActive software is available. Check the downloaded file by playing it on the intended phone or application; 3GPP support varies by device and codec combination.

Try FFmpeg when the input decoder is available

Recent FFmpeg builds may recognize some Vivo video files, but VIV support is not universal. Test the file first:

ffprobe input.viv

If FFprobe identifies a video and audio stream, convert it with H.263 video and AAC audio:

ffmpeg -i input.viv -c:v h263 -b:v 256k -vf "scale=176:144:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=176:144:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2" -c:a aac -b:a 32k -ar 8000 -ac 1 -f 3gp output.3gp

The 176x144 frame size matches a common legacy 3GPP/QCIF target. Replace it with the device’s supported dimensions when necessary, keeping both dimensions even. To target a phone that requires AMR-NB audio, use an FFmpeg build containing an AMR-NB encoder:

ffmpeg -i input.viv -c:v h263 -b:v 192k -vf "scale=176:144" -c:a libopencore_amrnb -ar 8000 -ac 1 -b:a 12.2k -f 3gp output.3gp

If FFprobe reports an unknown format or FFmpeg stops at the input stage, that build cannot decode the particular VIV file. Use the online conversion method or first open the file in a legacy VivoActive-compatible player and export it to an intermediate format, if that software provides an export function.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion cannot restore detail discarded by the original VIV encoding. Re-encoding to H.263 at a low bitrate can introduce block artifacts, especially in fast motion; use the highest bitrate accepted by the target device rather than repeatedly converting the file.

A file can have a valid .3gp extension and still fail on a phone if its codecs, frame size, frame rate, audio sample rate, or bitrate are unsupported. For older handsets, H.263 video, AMR-NB mono audio at 8 kHz, QCIF resolution, and a modest frame rate are generally safer than modern H.264/AAC settings. Keep the original VIV file because the 3GPP version is a compatibility copy, not a lossless preservation format.
