Some older video files use the VIV extension, while phones, media libraries, and editing applications commonly expect M4V. Converting the file creates an MPEG-4 video that is easier to play, edit, archive, or share.

What the VIV format is

VIV is an uncommon video container associated primarily with VivoActive, a legacy streaming-video system and its playback software. VIV files may contain proprietary or poorly supported video encoding, so the extension alone does not identify the exact codec. You may encounter them in old web archives, software installations, or recordings created with legacy VivoActive applications.

Modern players may not open VIV files directly. Renaming .viv to .m4v does not convert the video; the container and usually the codec must be rewritten.

What the M4V format is

M4V is an MPEG-4 video container commonly used with H.264 video and AAC audio. It is closely associated with Apple software and devices, but standard non-DRM M4V files also work in VLC, QuickTime, many mobile devices, and most editing applications.

M4V is suitable when you need broad playback compatibility, H.264 compression, or a file that can be imported into software expecting an MPEG-4 video. An M4V created from an unencrypted VIV file is normally a standard media file; it does not acquire Apple FairPlay DRM merely because the filename ends in .m4v.

How to convert VIV to M4V

Using the built-in online converter

  1. Open the VIV-to-M4V converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .viv file and select M4V as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .m4v file when processing finishes.
  4. Test the output in VLC or another player before deleting the source file.

This option requires no installed software. It can convert the file only if the service can decode the particular VIV variant; proprietary, damaged, or DRM-protected inputs may fail.

Using FFmpeg on a computer

FFmpeg is useful when the VIV codec is supported by the installed build. First inspect the source:

ffprobe input.viv

If FFmpeg identifies the video and audio streams, convert them to broadly compatible codecs with:

ffmpeg -i input.viv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -crf 20 -preset medium -c:a aac -b:a 160k -movflags +faststart output.m4v

-crf 20 provides good quality for many sources; use a lower value for higher quality and a higher value for a smaller file. The optional audio mapping prevents the command from failing when the VIV file has no audio stream.

If the video is already H.264 and the container can be read, you can try a remux without re-encoding:

ffmpeg -i input.viv -c copy -movflags +faststart output.m4v

Remuxing is faster and preserves the original quality, but it works only when the existing streams are valid in an M4V/MP4 container. If FFmpeg reports an unknown format or codec, use the online converter or the original VivoActive software to export the file first.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Re-encoding VIV to H.264 is lossy; the M4V cannot restore detail already lost in the source. Keep the original VIV file as an archival copy, and avoid repeated conversions. The output frame size and frame rate normally follow the source, while -crf, audio bitrate, and codec settings control the new file size and quality.

Some VIV files may be incomplete, encrypted, or dependent on a proprietary decoder. A converter may produce video without audio if the audio stream is unsupported. Check duration, synchronization, resolution, and audio after conversion. DRM-protected material may not be legally or technically convertible.
