What the KUX format is

KUX is a proprietary video format associated mainly with Youku downloads and its desktop software. It commonly stores H.264 or similar video with AAC audio, but may also include Youku-specific encryption, segmentation, or playback restrictions. You usually encounter KUX files in a Youku download folder rather than from a camera or general-purpose video editor.

Because KUX is not a broadly documented container, many general converters cannot decode every KUX file. A file can also use the .kux extension while still requiring the Youku application or account that created the download.

What the M4V format is

M4V is an MPEG-4 video container commonly used for H.264 video and AAC audio. It is supported by Apple software, media players, and many editors; compatibility is usually comparable to MP4, although some devices expect the .mp4 extension instead.

M4V is appropriate when the destination application specifically requests it or when you want a standard container for H.264/AAC video. Changing the extension from .kux to .m4v does not convert the file and will not remove KUX encryption.

How to actually convert KUX to M4V

1. Confirm that the KUX file is fully downloaded and can play in the Youku software that created it. Incomplete or protected downloads generally cannot be converted by third-party tools.
2. Open the converter on 101convert.com, select KUX as the source format and M4V as the target format, then upload the file.
3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .m4v file when processing finishes.
4. Test the output in the intended player or editor. If it rejects M4V but supports MPEG-4 video, rename a copy to .mp4 only when the application requires that extension; the container content remains unchanged.

For a KUX file that is already readable by FFmpeg, a local conversion can be attempted with:

ffmpeg -i input.kux -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -movflags +faststart output.m4v

FFmpeg will report an unsupported format, invalid data, or missing decoder when the file uses Youku-specific encryption or a proprietary KUX variant. Re-encoding with FFmpeg does not bypass DRM or playback authorization; use an authorized export or download option from the original service instead.

Quality and compatibility limitations

A conversion that re-encodes video can reduce quality and increase processing time. To preserve quality when FFmpeg reports compatible codecs, replace the video and audio options with -c:v copy -c:a copy; this only remuxes the streams and will fail if the codecs or KUX structure are incompatible with M4V.

M4V support varies by device, and some players accept the format only when it contains H.264 video and AAC audio. Protected or FairPlay-related files are not ordinary convertible M4V files and require playback through the service or software that issued the protection.
