Free online KUX to M4A converter

KUX files are Youku video files, but many players and audio editors do not support their proprietary container or encryption. Converting one to M4A extracts its audio for playback on phones, editing in audio software, or smaller audio-only storage.

What the KUX format is

KUX is a proprietary video format associated mainly with the Youku desktop application and Youku downloads. It is commonly encountered in downloaded or cached Youku content rather than in camera or general-purpose media workflows.

A KUX file may contain video, audio, proprietary metadata, encryption, or a combination of segmented download data. The extension alone does not guarantee that a generic media tool can read the file. Files protected by Youku's playback system may only work in the authorized Youku application, and renaming .kux to .mp4 does not convert or decrypt it.

What the M4A format is

M4A is an audio-only MPEG-4 container. It usually contains AAC audio, although it can also contain other MPEG-4 audio codecs. Phones, music players, media libraries, and editors generally support AAC in M4A more consistently than KUX.

M4A removes the video stream, reducing file size when only the soundtrack is needed. AAC at 128–256 kbps is suitable for most listening; lossless sources can also be stored in M4A with ALAC, but converting an ordinary KUX soundtrack cannot recover lossless quality that was not present in the source.

How to convert KUX to M4A

Using the built-in online converter

1. Open the KUX-to-M4A converter on 101convert.com.
2. Choose the KUX file from your computer. Do not upload a file that the Youku application has not fully downloaded.
3. Select M4A as the output format.
4. Start the conversion and download the resulting M4A file when processing finishes.

If the service rejects the file, reports an unsupported stream, or produces an empty audio track, the KUX is probably encrypted, incomplete, or encoded in a variant that requires the Youku application. A generic converter cannot remove account or DRM restrictions.

Using FFmpeg after obtaining a readable source

FFmpeg is useful when the KUX file is an unencrypted variant that FFmpeg can demux, but it does not bypass Youku protection. Test the file with:

ffprobe input.kux

If FFmpeg identifies an audio stream, extract and encode it as AAC with:

ffmpeg -i input.kux -vn -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a

The -vn option discards video, while -b:a 192k sets the AAC bitrate. For a source whose audio is already AAC and whose container can be copied safely, this may avoid another lossy encode:

ffmpeg -i input.kux -vn -c:a copy output.m4a

Use stream copying only if FFmpeg reports a compatible audio codec and the resulting file plays correctly. Otherwise, use AAC encoding rather than forcing an incompatible stream into an M4A container.

When KUX is protected

Open the content in the official Youku application and look for an application-provided download or export option. If it can produce MP4 or another standard file, extract its audio with:

ffmpeg -i source.mp4 -vn -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a

Do not attempt to defeat DRM or access controls; a protected KUX may not be legally or technically convertible outside the authorized player.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Converting video to M4A is an audio extraction process, not a quality upgrade. Re-encoding an already compressed soundtrack to AAC can introduce another generation of loss; use stream copy when the original audio is compatible, and otherwise choose a bitrate at least close to the source's effective quality.

M4A normally stores AAC, so select AAC output for broad compatibility. Check the finished file's duration, sample rate, channel count, and playback before deleting the original. A partial KUX download may convert successfully but contain truncated audio.
