What the KUX format is

KUX is a proprietary video container associated mainly with Youku downloads and cached offline video from the Youku desktop application. It can contain video and audio streams, but some KUX files use Youku-specific encryption or structural changes that prevent general-purpose media software from reading them.

You usually encounter KUX files after downloading a video for offline playback rather than when creating ordinary audio recordings. The file extension alone does not guarantee that the content is decryptable outside the Youku software that created it.

What the MP3 format is

MP3 is a lossy audio format supported by phones, computers, car stereos, portable players, podcast tools, and most audio editors. It is suitable when you need the audio track without the original video and want a smaller, broadly compatible file.

MP3 cannot retain video, subtitles, chapters, or multiple video-related streams. Conversion also cannot restore quality already lost in the source KUX audio.

How to convert KUX to MP3

Use the built-in online converter

1. Open the KUX-to-MP3 converter on 101convert.com.
2. Select or drag the .kux file into the upload area.
3. Choose MP3 as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .mp3 file when processing finishes.

This route requires no locally installed conversion software, but the file must be uploadable and readable by the converter. Do not upload material that contains confidential or restricted content unless the service's handling terms are acceptable to you.

Use FFmpeg when the KUX file is readable

FFmpeg can extract and encode the first audio stream if it recognizes the KUX container:

-vn discards video, -map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream, and -q:a 2 creates variable-bitrate MP3 audio at roughly 190 kbps, depending on the source. Replace the filenames with the actual paths; enclosing paths in quotation marks handles spaces.

Before running the conversion, test whether FFmpeg can inspect the file:

ffprobe "input.kux"

If FFmpeg reports an invalid data format, cannot find an audio stream, or stops at an encryption-related error, the file is not directly usable by FFmpeg. Use a compatible Youku playback or download application to obtain an unprotected, standard video file first, then extract its audio with the same command. Do not rename .kux to .mp4; changing the extension does not convert the container.

Quality and compatibility limitations

MP3 conversion is a second lossy encoding step when the KUX source already contains AAC or another compressed audio codec. Use -q:a 2 for a general-purpose result, -b:a 128k for smaller speech files, or -b:a 256k when preserving more music detail matters; none of these settings can improve the original recording.

A KUX file may contain no audio stream, may be incomplete, or may be encrypted for playback only inside Youku software. In those cases, a converter cannot reliably produce MP3. If the source contains several audio tracks, replace -map 0:a:0 with the required stream index, such as -map 0:a:1.
