Older phones and carrier messaging systems may save recordings as .3g2, while music players, audio editors, and some sharing platforms expect .mp3. Converting the file extracts its audio track and makes it usable without the original mobile-video software.

What 3G2 is

3G2 is a multimedia container based on 3GP and standardized for many CDMA mobile networks. Older CDMA phones, carrier messaging systems, and legacy mobile-video applications used it for recordings and multimedia messages. A 3G2 file can contain video and audio encoded with formats such as AMR-NB, AAC, or QCELP; changing .3g2 to .mp3 only renames the file and does not convert it.

A file with no audio stream cannot produce a useful MP3. Some 3G2 files also use codecs that are not supported by every media player, so a converter may need to decode the source before exporting it.

MP3 is a lossy audio format based on MPEG Audio Layer III. It is supported by most desktop and mobile players, car stereos, browsers, editing applications, and media libraries. MP3 encoding discards audio information. It cannot restore detail already lost in the original 3G2 recording, and increasing the MP3 bitrate cannot improve a low-quality AMR recording. If the source contains AAC or another lossy codec, exporting to MP3 adds another lossy encoding step.

For narrowband speech where file size matters more than music quality, use:

ffmpeg -i input.3g2 -vn -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 64k -ac 1 output.mp3

This creates a 64 kbps mono MP3. For music or stereo audio, use a quality setting such as -q:a 2 or a fixed bitrate such as -b:a 192k. The appropriate setting depends on the source; a higher output bitrate does not recover missing detail.

Using VLC as a graphical alternative

VLC can convert 3G2 files when the installed build supports the source's audio codec:

1. Open VLC and choose Media → Convert / Save.
2. Select Add, choose the .3g2 file, then select Convert / Save.
3. Choose the Audio - MP3 profile.
4. Specify a destination ending in .mp3 and select Start.

If VLC reports that the file cannot be decoded or creates a silent output, inspect or convert it with FFmpeg instead; support for older codecs varies by VLC build and operating system.

Quality and compatibility checks

Inspect the source streams before conversion with:

An AMR-NB stream is normally narrowband speech, so the resulting MP3 will retain limited frequency range and speech-oriented quality. Preserve the original .3g2 file, use a new output filename, and verify that the MP3 plays from beginning to end before deleting anything. If further editing is planned and the application supports the source codec, retaining the original avoids an unnecessary additional lossy conversion.
