Convert AAE to MP3

A phone or photo archive may contain an .aae sidecar beside a JPEG, while an editor or player that accepts only MP3 needs an actual audio track. The sidecar cannot supply one; use the original audio or video file, then export that media as MP3.

What an AAE file contains

AAE is an Apple sidecar file used by Photos on iOS and macOS. It stores XML-based instructions for non-destructive edits made to a photo, such as cropping, rotation, filters, and exposure changes; it does not contain the photo, sound, or video data itself.

AAE files are usually stored beside the corresponding JPEG or HEIC file with a matching base filename. Apple Photos and compatible software can use the sidecar with its original image, while many other programs ignore it. Renaming .aae to .mp3, opening it in an audio editor, or uploading it to a converter cannot create audio. If the AAE file is the only file available, there is no media stream to convert.

What MP3 provides

MP3 is a lossy audio format supported by most phones, computers, browsers, music players, and car systems. It produces much smaller files than uncompressed WAV or lossless formats, but encoding discards audio information and cannot improve the quality of the source.

How to create an MP3

1. Find the original media. Match the AAE filename with its JPEG or HEIC image. If the intended source is a recording or video, locate that separate audio or video file; an AAE sidecar is not its source.
2. Export the required version. Use the application that contains the media. Apple Photos can export an original through File → Export → Export Unmodified Original; use its regular export command when you need a rendered version of supported edits. An image alone has no audio to extract. If the source is a video, confirm that it contains an audio track.
3. Convert the exported audio or video. Choose MP3 as the output format in a desktop application or online service. Do not submit the AAE file.

Desktop conversion options

FFmpeg converts both audio and video and is suitable for repeatable conversions. For a video containing sound, run:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vn -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 2 output.mp3

-vn removes video, while -q:a 2 selects high-quality variable-bitrate MP3 encoding. Use -b:a 192k instead of -q:a 2 when a fixed bitrate is required.

VLC media player can handle common audio and video sources: open Media → Convert/Save, add the source, select Convert, choose an Audio - MP3 profile, specify the destination ending in .mp3, and start the conversion. VLC extracts audio only when the source has an audio stream.

Audacity is suitable for audio files and editing before export. Open the source, optionally trim or adjust it, then choose File → Export Audio, select MP3, and set the desired bitrate. It cannot turn an AAE sidecar or a still image into sound.

Online conversion options

Services such as CloudConvert and Convertio accept common audio and video formats and can output MP3. Upload the original audio or video, select MP3, choose the bitrate if offered, run the conversion, and download the result. Online services generally reject AAE files because they contain no media stream.

Uploading sends the source to a third party, and free services may impose file-size, duration, queue, or retention limits. Use desktop software for private recordings, sensitive images, or large files.

Quality and compatibility limits

Converting a compressed AAC, M4A, or video soundtrack to MP3 performs another lossy encode; it does not restore missing detail. Use the original audio source and a sufficiently high bitrate, commonly 192 or 256 kbps, when compatibility matters. If the receiving application supports the original AAC, WAV, or FLAC format, keeping that source avoids unnecessary quality loss.

Exporting a rendered photo from Photos does not create an audio track. To produce sound from still images, create a slideshow or video with an audio source in a separate editor and then extract that soundtrack as MP3; that is a new production, not an AAE conversion.
