Convert AAE to PDF

A PDF is useful when an edited iPhone or iPad photo must be submitted, printed, emailed, or opened on a computer without Apple Photos. An .AAE file cannot supply the image by itself, so the matching photo must be rendered first and then saved as a PDF.

What the AAE format is

.AAE is an Apple sidecar format used with photos edited in Photos on iPhone, iPad, and, in some workflows, macOS. It stores non-destructive adjustment information such as cropping, rotation, exposure, and filters; it does not contain the photograph's pixels.

The image normally remains in a separate file with the same base name, such as IMG_1234.HEIC or IMG_1234.JPG, alongside IMG_1234.AAE. AAE files are generally XML-based and are mainly useful to Apple software. Deleting one normally leaves the original image intact, but the associated edits may no longer be available outside the Apple Photos environment.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a page-oriented document format that preserves images, text, layout, and print dimensions across operating systems. It is suitable for submission, printing, email, and sharing because the recipient does not need Apple Photos.

PDF does not preserve AAE adjustments as editable instructions. It contains a rendered image, so the visible edits are retained only as part of the exported picture.

How to convert the edited photo to PDF

On an iPhone or iPad

1. Open the photo in Photos and confirm that the desired edits are visible.
2. Tap Share → Print.
3. On the print preview, spread two fingers apart on the image preview to open it as a PDF.
4. Tap Share, then choose Save to Files or another destination.

This workflow uses the rendered photo shown by Photos; it does not convert the loose AAE file.

Using Photos and Preview on a Mac

1. Open the photo in Photos on the Mac or on the Apple device where the edits are visible.
2. Choose File → Export → Export 1 Photo. Export the current edited version as JPEG or PNG.
3. Open the exported image in Preview.
4. Choose File → Print, set the paper size and orientation, select PDF → Save as PDF, and choose a filename.

For multiple photos, select them in Photos and export them together, then select the exported images in Preview and use File → Print. The print dialog can place multiple images per page; otherwise, use one image per page.

If the only files available are a loose image and an AAE sidecar, importing both into Photos is not a dependable way to reconstruct the edit. Export the photo from the original iPhone, iPad, or Mac Photos library while the edit is still visible. If Photos shows only the unedited image, the sidecar is not being interpreted and cannot independently recreate the result.

On Windows or with an online service

First obtain the edited image as a JPEG or PNG from the Apple device or Photos. In Windows, open the image and choose Print → Microsoft Print to PDF. Online services such as Adobe Acrobat online or CloudConvert can also convert the exported JPEG or PNG: upload the image, select PDF as the output, start the conversion, and download the result. These services do not convert an AAE sidecar into an edited photograph.

Use online conversion only for images suitable for third-party processing, because uploading sends the file to an external server.

Convert the AAE text instead of the photo

If the required result is a record of the adjustment data, open the .AAE file in a text editor or browser and use Print → Save as PDF. The resulting PDF contains XML metadata, not the edited photograph, and is usually unsuitable for photo submission or printing.

Quality and compatibility limits

There is no meaningful direct AAE-to-PDF conversion: the sidecar lacks the pixels needed to render an image and Apple-specific processing needed to interpret its adjustments. A converter that accepts only the AAE can display or print its text, but cannot reliably produce the edited photo.

Exporting as JPEG can introduce recompression and reduce quality. PNG avoids JPEG recompression but usually creates a larger file; it is useful for screenshots, graphics, or images requiring lossless output. PDF settings such as paper size, scaling, and image resolution affect the final result, so check the print preview before saving.
