Convert CDA to MP3

Phones, car stereos, editors, and sharing services often require MP3 files rather than audio-CD track references. Ripping the disc to MP3 also makes the tracks much smaller for portable storage and routine backups.

What the CDA format is

.cda is not an audio codec or a standalone sound file. When Windows detects an audio CD, it displays small track references such as Track01.cda; each reference points to audio sectors on the disc and normally works only while that disc is in the drive.

Audio CDs generate these references automatically, so they may appear in Windows File Explorer, CD-burning software, and older media players. Copying a .cda reference to a hard drive does not copy the music. The conversion must read the actual audio data from the CD.

What the MP3 format is

MP3 is a lossy compressed audio format supported by phones, car stereos, media players, editing applications, and most upload services. A CD stores uncompressed 16-bit, 44.1 kHz PCM audio; MP3 encoding produces much smaller files by discarding some audio information.

MP3 is suitable for portable listening, sharing, and everyday playback. Keep a lossless WAV or FLAC rip as the archival master when preservation or repeated editing matters; converting MP3 back to WAV or FLAC cannot restore discarded information.

How to convert the disc to MP3

Windows: Exact Audio Copy

1. Install Exact Audio Copy (EAC) and a LAME MP3 encoder from their official distribution sources.
2. Insert the audio CD and let EAC identify it. Complete the drive setup so EAC can use secure ripping and report read errors.
3. Open EAC → Compression Options → External Compression, enable external compression, select LAME, and choose a quality setting. V2 VBR is a common listening-quality choice; use 256 or 320 kbps CBR when a particular device requires a fixed bitrate.
4. Retrieve or enter the artist, album, year, and track names. Select Action → Copy Selected Tracks → Compressed. EAC reads the CD sectors and creates MP3 files; it does not convert copied CDA references.
5. Review the ripping log for read errors and play the resulting files before removing the disc.

Windows: fre:ac

1. Install fre:ac from its official site and insert the audio CD.
2. Choose MP3 as the output encoder and set the bitrate or VBR quality in the encoder settings.
3. Load the track metadata, select the tracks, choose an output folder, and start the conversion. fre:ac reads the disc and encodes the audio directly.

fre:ac is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. EAC is a better choice for difficult or scratched discs because its secure-ripping features provide more detailed error detection.

Windows: Windows Media Player

1. Open the legacy Windows Media Player, if it is installed, and insert the CD.
2. Open Organize → Options → Rip Music, set Format to MP3, and choose the audio quality.
3. Select the tracks and click Rip CD. The files are normally saved in the Music folder.

Windows 10 and 11 may use the newer Media Player app, which does not provide the same CD-ripping controls. Install or enable legacy Windows Media Player, or use fre:ac or EAC instead.

MacOS: Music

1. Insert the CD and open Music.
2. Open Music → Settings → Files → Import Settings, choose MP3 Encoder, and select the desired quality.
3. Import the CD when prompted. For tracks already imported in another format, select them and choose File → Convert → Create MP3 Version.

Online conversion and limitations

Browser-based services cannot normally convert uploaded .cda references because those files contain no audio data and the service cannot access the physical CD. First rip the disc to WAV or FLAC with desktop software.

After a real audio file exists, services such as CloudConvert or Zamzar can convert WAV or FLAC to MP3: upload the file, choose MP3, set the desired bitrate, start the conversion, and download the result. Check upload size limits, deletion policies, and privacy terms before sending recordings to an online service; desktop encoding is preferable for private or large collections.

Quality and compatibility

MP3 bitrate controls the trade-off between size and quality. VBR generally allocates bits more efficiently than fixed-bitrate encoding, while 320 kbps creates larger files with little practical benefit for many listeners. Use the device or service's required bitrate when compatibility is more important than file size.

Secure ripping helps recover accurate audio from scratched discs, but severe read errors may still produce audible defects. Keep the original lossless rip when the recording may need restoration, editing, or future re-encoding.
