Convert CDA to WAV

An audio editor, sampler, or older media player may require uncompressed WAV files instead of tracks from an audio CD. The conversion must read the physical disc because a .cda entry copied from the disc contains no recorded audio.

What the CDA format is

.cda files are small track-reference entries displayed by Windows for an audio CD. They identify track positions on the disc but contain no music data, so they normally work only while the original CD is inserted. A data-recovery or file-conversion program cannot reconstruct the audio from a copied .cda file; a CD-ripping application must read the disc’s CD-DA sectors.

What the WAV format is

WAV is a container commonly used for uncompressed PCM audio. It is supported by most audio editors, DAWs, samplers, and video applications, and it preserves the source samples without the losses introduced by MP3 or AAC encoding. Standard CD audio produces 44.1 kHz, 16-bit, stereo PCM WAV files at about 10.6 MB per minute.

How to extract WAV files

Windows Media Player

1. Insert the audio CD and open Windows Media Player Legacy.
2. Open Organize → Options → Rip Music.
3. Set Rip settings → Format to WAV (Lossless), choose the destination folder, and apply the settings.
4. Select the required tracks and choose Rip CD. The player reads the disc and creates one WAV file per track; dragging .cda entries to a folder does not convert them.

Exact Audio Copy

Exact Audio Copy is a suitable Windows choice when scratched discs, secure extraction, and error reporting matter.

1. Install EAC, insert the CD, and configure the optical drive when prompted.
2. Select the tracks and choose Action → Copy Selected Tracks → Uncompressed.
3. Choose a destination and enter or verify the track metadata. EAC writes separate WAV files and can report unreadable sectors or suspicious extraction results.

MacOS Music

1. Insert the audio CD and open Music.
2. Open Music → Settings → Files → Import Settings, select WAV Encoder, and confirm.
3. Select the disc in the sidebar and choose Import CD. Music saves the imported tracks as WAV files.

Other software and online services

fre:ac can rip audio CDs and encode the tracks as WAV on supported desktop systems. VLC can also read many audio CDs, but dedicated rippers such as EAC provide better extraction diagnostics.

An online converter cannot convert a standalone .cda file because it has no audio payload. Services such as CloudConvert or Zamzar are appropriate only after you have a real audio file to upload; they cannot read a physical CD through a browser and may reprocess the audio. Local ripping also avoids uploading copyrighted recordings or private disc contents.

Quality and compatibility limits

WAV extraction does not improve CD audio: it reproduces the disc’s 44.1 kHz, 16-bit PCM samples. Scratches or damaged sectors can cause clicks, missing samples, or read errors; use EAC’s secure extraction mode or another error-reporting ripper instead of relying on a basic copy operation.

WAV files are large and metadata support varies between applications. For lossless archiving, FLAC usually uses less storage while preserving the same audio, but WAV is the safer choice when the target application specifically requires WAV.
