A phone, car stereo, or audio editor usually cannot open an SFARK SoundFont archive. To create a shareable MP3, decompress the bank, play its instruments with MIDI or another performance, and encode the rendered audio.

What the SFARK format is

SFARK is a lossless compression format for .sf2 SoundFont banks, created by the Melody Machine sfArk utility. SoundFont banks are used by MIDI synthesizers, samplers, music software, and older archived synthesizer libraries.

An SF2 bank contains sampled instrument audio plus key ranges, velocity layers, tuning, envelopes, effects settings, and other playback parameters. It is not a finished song or recording. Decompressing an .sfark or .sfArk file restores the original .sf2; renaming the extension does not convert it to playable audio.

What the MP3 format is

MP3 is a lossy compressed format for finished audio recordings. Phones, media players, web browsers, car stereos, and most sharing applications support it, and its smaller files are convenient for playback and distribution.

MP3 cannot preserve a SoundFont's separate samples, preset structure, key mapping, effects, or editable synthesis settings. Keep the decompressed .sf2, MIDI data, and project files if those elements may need further editing.

How to convert SFARK to MP3

1. Decompress the archive. Make a backup of the original file. Open it with a compatible desktop sfArk decompressor, such as sfArkXTc, choose Decompress or the equivalent command, and save the resulting .sf2. The available builds and supported operating systems vary because sfArk is legacy software.
2. Load the SoundFont. Open the restored .sf2 in a SoundFont-compatible synthesizer or sampler, such as FluidSynth, MuseScore, a digital audio workstation, or a sampler plug-in. Select the required preset; one bank can contain many instruments.
3. Provide a performance. Use a MIDI file containing notes and controller data, or create the notes in a MIDI editor or DAW. Check the MIDI channels, program changes, velocity, tuning, and effects. An SFARK file alone does not specify which notes or instrument performance should become the MP3.
4. Render to WAV. For example, FluidSynth can render a MIDI file with:
   fluidsynth -ni soundfont.sf2 performance.mid -F rendered.wav -r 44100
   Use the actual filenames and select the SoundFont preset and MIDI routing required by the performance.
5. Encode the WAV. Convert the uncompressed render with FFmpeg:
   ffmpeg -i rendered.wav -codec:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k output.mp3
   Use -b:a 320k for a larger constant-bitrate file or -q:a 2 for high-quality variable-bitrate encoding. Many DAWs can perform the WAV render and MP3 export through File → Export instead.

You can also use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. If it only decompresses the SFARK archive, use the resulting .sf2 with a local SoundFont synthesizer and complete the MIDI rendering and MP3 encoding locally.

Quality and compatibility limits

SFARK decompression is lossless, so it does not reduce the SoundFont data. The rendered sound depends on the selected preset, MIDI interpretation, synthesizer engine, effects, sample rate, and output settings; different SoundFont players may produce different results.

MP3 encoding discards audio information and cannot recreate the original SFARK archive. Keep the original .sfark, restored .sf2, MIDI files, and WAV master for archival or later editing. If a decompressor reports an unsupported or damaged archive, use a different compatible sfArk build rather than changing the filename extension.
