Free online M4V to MP3 converter

A car stereo, portable player, or audio editor may accept MP3 but not an M4V video file. Converting extracts the soundtrack, removes the video, and creates a smaller file for listening, editing, sharing, or archiving.

What the M4V format is

M4V is an MPEG-4 video container associated with Apple software and services, including iTunes, Apple TV, QuickTime, and some video-editing applications. It commonly contains H.264 or H.265 video with AAC audio, but the codecs depend on how the file was created.

Some M4V files are ordinary, unprotected videos. Others contain Apple FairPlay DRM, particularly movies or television episodes purchased or rented through older iTunes systems. Standard conversion software cannot process protected content; use only files that you are authorized to convert and that are available without DRM. Do not attempt to bypass copy protection.

What the MP3 format is

MP3 is a lossy audio format supported by most phones, computers, car stereos, portable players, and audio-editing programs. It discards less-audible information to reduce size, so an audio-only MP3 is much smaller than the original video file and does not contain video, subtitles, or chapters.

For general listening, 192 kbps is a common fixed bitrate. Use 256 or 320 kbps when larger files are acceptable, or use high-quality variable bitrate encoding. Higher settings cannot restore detail already lost in the source audio.

How to convert the file

Using 101convert.com: Open the converter, select the M4V file, choose MP3 as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. This option requires no software installation and is free to use. Avoid uploading confidential files or material you do not have permission to process.

Using VLC media player:

1. Open VLC and select Media → Convert / Save.
2. Click Add, select the M4V file, and click Convert / Save.
3. Choose the Audio - MP3 profile.
4. Set a destination filename ending in .mp3.
5. Click Start. VLC converts the selected audio while discarding the video stream.

VLC is available for major desktop operating systems, but menu labels and available profiles can vary by version. It cannot convert FairPlay-protected files.

Using FFmpeg: FFmpeg is suitable for command-line and batch processing. From the folder containing the source file, run:

ffmpeg -i "input.m4v" -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 2 "output.mp3"

-map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream, -vn excludes video, and -q:a 2 requests high-quality variable-bitrate MP3 encoding. Quotation marks preserve spaces in filenames. For a fixed bitrate, use:

ffmpeg -i "input.m4v" -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k "output.mp3"

If the file contains several audio tracks, change 0:a:0 to 0:a:1 or another stream index. FFmpeg must be built with the libmp3lame encoder for these commands to work.

Quality and compatibility limits

Many M4V files already use lossy AAC audio. Encoding that audio again as MP3 is a second lossy step and can reduce clarity, especially at low bitrates. Keep the original M4V as the archival copy and use the highest practical MP3 quality.

Conversion does not preserve the video track, subtitles, or chapter navigation. Album artwork, chapters, language tags, and other metadata may transfer inconsistently, so check the output in the intended player. If the source has no usable audio stream, an audio-only MP3 cannot be created.
