Convert HTML to MP3

A phone, car stereo, podcast editor, or offline archive may require spoken audio in MP3 rather than a browser-readable HTML page. Because HTML contains markup and text instead of a finished audio track, the conversion normally uses text-to-speech (TTS).

What the HTML format is

HTML (HyperText Markup Language) describes headings, paragraphs, links, tables, images, and other web-page elements. Browsers render HTML; code editors, website builders, content-management systems, email exporters, and word processors that save web pages can create it. Common files include saved pages, documentation, email exports, and locally stored website content.

HTML does not identify every element that should be spoken. A converter must extract readable text while excluding tags, navigation, scripts, styling, advertisements, comments, and unrelated controls. Content generated by JavaScript may not exist in the original file and may require opening the page in a browser first.

What the MP3 format is

MP3 is a lossy, compressed audio format supported by phones, cars, music players, editing software, and podcast services. It produces substantially smaller files than uncompressed WAV, making it practical for storage and sharing, but it discards some audio information.

For ordinary speech, 64–96 kbps mono usually provides a reasonable size and voice quality. Use 128 kbps for music, sound effects, or higher-fidelity speech. The selected TTS voice, pronunciation, and source-text cleanup usually affect intelligibility more than the MP3 bitrate.

Desktop conversion on Windows

Balabolka is a practical Windows option: it can open HTML, use installed SAPI-compatible voices, and save synthesized speech as MP3.

1. Install Balabolka and a voice that supports the document's language, such as a Microsoft system voice or another SAPI-compatible voice.
2. Open the file with File → Open and select page.html. If the file contains navigation, advertisements, or script-generated content, open it in a browser, use reader mode if available, and copy only the required text into Balabolka.
3. Select the voice, language, speaking rate, and pitch. Preview several paragraphs to find pronunciation errors, missing characters, or unwanted page text.
4. Choose File → Save Audio File, select MP3, set the destination such as page.mp3, and choose an appropriate bitrate. Mono is sufficient for most speech.
5. Play the result in VLC, on the target phone or car stereo, or in an audio editor. Check headings, links, footnotes, tables, and page breaks for incorrect reading order.

Conversion on macOS and Linux

Extract and clean the text before invoking a speech engine. A browser's reader view, a readability tool, or a command-line HTML-to-text utility can create clean.txt; these methods cannot recover content that is generated only after JavaScript runs.

On macOS, the built-in say command can create an intermediate AIFF file:

say -f clean.txt -o speech.aiff

On Linux, an installed eSpeak NG voice can create WAV audio:

espeak-ng -f clean.txt -w speech.wav

Encode the intermediate audio with FFmpeg:

ffmpeg -i speech.wav -codec:a libmp3lame -b:a 96k -ac 1 page.mp3

For macOS AIFF input, replace speech.wav with speech.aiff. FFmpeg only encodes audio; it does not parse HTML or perform speech synthesis. The speech engine must create the intermediate audio first.

Online conversion

Cloud TTS services such as ElevenLabs and NaturalReader can turn pasted, cleaned page text into downloadable audio, subject to their current account limits and export options. Direct .html upload support varies, so paste the readable text or upload a supported document instead of assuming the service will execute the page correctly.

Online processing sends the text to a third party. Do not upload private documentation, personal data, or confidential pages unless the provider's retention, training, and deletion terms are acceptable. A local application is preferable when the source must remain offline.

Quality and compatibility limits

This process normally creates a text-to-speech rendition; it does not extract an audio track that is already present in the page. If HTML contains an audio player, inspect its source or network request and download the original audio file when permitted. Re-synthesizing nearby text will not preserve the original narration, music, or sound effects.

Images, charts, CSS layout, hyperlinks, forms, comments, and interactive controls cannot be represented directly in MP3. Alt text may be spoken if it survives extraction and the TTS application includes it, but visual relationships and table structure can be lost.

Save intermediate text as UTF-8 so accented characters and non-Latin scripts remain intact, and select a voice that supports the document language. MP3 is sequential audio, so it does not retain searchable text, clickable links, or HTML bookmarks; keep the original HTML or a separate transcript when those features are needed.

A browser's Save page as command saves an HTML page and its related resources; it does not convert the page to MP3. Renaming an .html file with an .mp3 extension also does not create valid audio.
