Convert AUP to MP3

Phones, car stereos, media players, and many web services cannot play an Audacity project file, so the finished audio must be exported to MP3. Exporting creates a smaller shareable copy while preserving the original project for later editing.

What the AUP format is

.aup is the XML project format used by Audacity 2.x. It stores the project layout, edits, labels, effect settings, and references to audio data; it is not an audio file that ordinary media players can decode.

An older project normally consists of an .aup file and a matching folder ending in _data, for example Interview.aup and Interview_data. Keep both items together with their original names. Audacity 3.x and later use .aup3, which stores the project and its audio data in one file. These formats are used by people who record, edit, mix, or restore audio in Audacity.

What the MP3 format is

MP3 is a lossy, compressed audio format supported by phones, browsers, car stereos, music players, podcast platforms, and most audio editors. It produces substantially smaller files than uncompressed WAV or AIFF by removing audio information judged less audible by the encoder.

MP3 suits listening, sharing, and web delivery, but it is not an ideal editing master. Keep the Audacity project and, when quality matters, a WAV or AIFF export. Repeatedly encoding an MP3 after editing introduces additional lossy-compression damage.

How to export an MP3 in Audacity

1. Install Audacity from audacityteam.org if it is not already installed. Modern Audacity releases include MP3 export support.
2. For an old project, place the .aup file beside its matching _data folder. Do not rename, move, or delete either item before opening it.
3. Open Audacity and choose File → Open, then select the .aup or .aup3 file. If Audacity reports missing data, restore the original file and folder structure from a backup; an .aup file alone generally cannot recover missing recorded samples.
4. Check the tracks, mute and solo states, sample rate, selection, and effects. In the export dialog, choose the entire project or the current selection as required. Audacity exports the resulting audible mix, not separate editable tracks.
5. Choose File → Export Audio, select MP3 as the format, choose a destination and filename, and start the export.
6. Set the MP3 encoding options. For general music, 192 kbps or higher is a common compromise; 256 or 320 kbps retains more detail but creates larger files. For speech, lower bitrates may be adequate. Use constant bitrate (CBR) when compatibility with older hardware is more important than size efficiency.
7. Enter metadata such as title, artist, or album if required, save the file, and play the resulting .mp3 outside Audacity to check its duration, volume, and channel layout.

Do not change .aup to .mp3 by renaming the extension. Generic converters cannot interpret Audacity’s project structure and cannot reconstruct its referenced audio, edits, or mix.

Using an online converter

Online services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar are suitable for a standalone WAV or AIFF export, not usually for an original .aup project. First export a WAV in Audacity with File → Export Audio, then upload that file to the service, choose MP3, select the bitrate, convert it, and download the result.

Uploading recorded speech, interviews, or music to a third-party service may create a privacy risk. Check the service’s file-size limits, retention policy, and deletion controls; use Audacity’s local export when the source is sensitive or the project is large.

Quality and compatibility limits

The MP3 contains a rendered mix only. It does not preserve Audacity tracks, clip boundaries, automation, labels as editable project data, effect settings, or undo history. For a lossless archive, export WAV or AIFF before creating the MP3, or retain the original Audacity project with all required files.

If a project opens but contains silence or unexpected timing, inspect track mute and solo controls and verify the export range before changing the bitrate. If the project cannot find audio, locate the missing or damaged _data folder or restore the project from backup.
