Convert AUP to WAV

A program, editing application, or playback device may require a standard audio file instead of an Audacity project. Exporting the project as .wav renders its tracks and edits into a file that can be shared, edited, or archived independently.

What the AUP format is

.aup is the legacy project format used by Audacity before version 3.0. It stores the track arrangement, edits, labels, effects, and project settings; the recorded audio is stored separately in a companion folder named like project_data. A complete project therefore requires both project.aup and its matching project_data folder.

AUP files are used by people who saved recordings or multitrack work in older Audacity releases, including podcast, music, voice, and sound-editing projects. Audacity 3.x uses the single-file .aup3 format but can generally open older .aup projects. Keep the original project and data folder together, and do not rename individual files inside the folder.

What the WAV format is

.wav normally uses the RIFF container with uncompressed PCM audio. It is accepted by most audio editors, video applications, media players, sound libraries, CD-production workflows, and hardware that cannot open Audacity projects.

PCM WAV avoids lossy compression, but it is much larger than MP3, AAC, or OGG. 16-bit PCM at 44.1 kHz is a broadly compatible setting; for production work, retain the project’s sample rate and bit depth when the destination supports them. Exporting at a lower rate or bit depth can discard information, even though the WAV itself is uncompressed.

How to export AUP as WAV

1. Make a backup copy of project.aup and its matching project_data folder. An isolated AUP file usually cannot provide the original audio if the companion folder is missing.
2. Install Audacity from audacityteam.org. If the current release cannot open the project, use a compatible older Audacity release from the official legacy downloads and work on a copy.
3. Open Audacity and select File → Open, then choose project.aup. Check that every track loads and that Audacity does not report missing block files or media.
4. Inspect the track arrangement, mute and solo states, labels, selection range, and effects. The export contains the audible result of the current project, not merely the raw recordings.
5. Set the project rate if a specific output rate is required. In Audacity, use the project-rate control at the bottom of the window or the applicable project settings.
6. Select File → Export Audio in current Audacity versions, or the older File → Export command. Choose WAV, specify a filename such as recording.wav, and select WAV (Microsoft) signed 16-bit PCM for general compatibility.
7. Open the exported WAV in a player or editor and verify its duration, channel count, and sound before changing or deleting the source project.

Audacity is the appropriate desktop tool because it understands the AUP project structure and renders its edits. Most online converters cannot process an AUP correctly: uploading only project.aup omits the required data folder, and uploading a project may expose private recordings. Reputable online services can convert an already-exported audio file to another format, but they are not a dependable substitute for opening and rendering the original AUP locally.

Quality and compatibility limits

WAV export cannot restore clipped, muted, deleted, or low-resolution audio. It also cannot recover missing project data. If Audacity reports missing block files, locate the original matching project_data folder or restore the complete project from backup.

Audacity may mix multiple tracks into the selected output channel layout during export, and effects are rendered into the result. A stereo 44.1 kHz, 16-bit WAV uses approximately 10.6 MB per minute; longer recordings therefore require substantially more storage than compressed formats.
