Free online DSF to WAV converter

Many music editors, media players, and audio interfaces accept PCM WAV but cannot decode DSD Stream File audio. Converting a DSF recording creates a standard PCM file for editing, video production, hardware playback, or sharing.

What the DSF format is

DSF, or DSD Stream File, stores Direct Stream Digital (DSD) audio as one-bit samples at very high rates. Common source formats include DSD64 at 2.8224 MHz, DSD128 at 5.6448 MHz, and DSD256 at 11.2896 MHz. DSF files can contain metadata such as artist, album, track title, and cover art.

DSF is used for high-resolution music downloads, SACD rips, and recordings produced by DSD-capable audio applications. It is an audio format and should not be confused with unrelated files that use the same extension.

What the WAV format is

WAV is a container, usually containing uncompressed PCM audio. Windows, macOS, Linux, digital audio workstations, sample editors, media players, video applications, and many hardware recorders support PCM WAV without a DSD decoder.

WAV is suitable for editing and production because PCM samples can be processed directly without lossy compression. It generally requires more storage than compressed audio. A specialized DSD-in-WAV variant exists, but ordinary applications expect PCM WAV, so select PCM as the conversion output.

How to convert DSF to WAV

Using foobar2000

1. Install foobar2000 and its Super Audio CD decoder component, commonly distributed as foo_input_sacd.
2. Open Preferences → Tools → SACD and set the output mode to PCM, not DSD.
3. Choose a supported PCM sample rate. For DSD64, 176400 Hz is a common choice because it is one-sixteenth of the 2.8224 MHz source rate. For DSD128, 352800 Hz is the corresponding rate; lower rates such as 88.2 or 176.4 kHz may be preferable for wider application compatibility.
4. Add the .dsf file, right-click it, and choose Convert → ....
5. Select WAV output and choose 24-bit PCM for broad hardware compatibility. Choose 32-bit floating-point PCM when the file will undergo substantial further processing and the destination supports it.
6. Set the destination folder and start the conversion. For an album, select all tracks before opening the conversion dialog.

Open a converted file in the intended application before processing a large collection. Check that the output has a .wav extension and that its sample rate and bit depth match the destination requirements.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert a DSF file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the file, choose WAV as the output, start processing, and download the resulting file when it is ready. Online conversion may impose upload-size limits and is unsuitable for recordings that must remain private.

Using FFmpeg

A current FFmpeg build with DSF and DSD decoding support may work from a terminal:

ffmpeg -i input.dsf -ar 176400 -c:a pcm_s24le output.wav

This command requests 176.4 kHz, 24-bit signed PCM. FFmpeg builds differ in DSD support; if the input format or codec is reported as unknown, use foobar2000 or another application with a working DSD decoder. Use a different -ar value when the source or destination requires another sample rate.

Quality and compatibility limits

This conversion is not a file-extension change. The software decodes the one-bit DSD stream, applies a low-pass filter to remove ultrasonic noise inherent in DSD, and generates multibit PCM samples. A conventional PCM WAV cannot preserve the original DSD representation.

Choose 88.2, 176.4, or 352.8 kHz when supported by the destination; these rates relate cleanly to common DSD rates. Higher rates do not restore information lost by the conversion and may produce larger files. Twenty-four-bit PCM is widely supported, while 32-bit floating point provides processing headroom but is rejected by some players and hardware.

DSF metadata, artwork, track boundaries, and padding do not always transfer completely. Verify tags and album art after conversion, and compare the output duration with the source. DSD files and high-rate WAV files can both be large, so check available storage before batch conversion.
