How to convert dsf to mp3 file

  • Audio

Many phones, car stereos, editing programs, and portable players cannot open DSF files, so an MP3 copy is useful for everyday playback, sharing, and smaller storage. The conversion is lossy, so the original DSF should be retained for archival use.

What the DSF format is

DSF means DSD Stream File. It is a container for Direct Stream Digital audio, a one-bit stream commonly sampled at 2.8224 MHz for DSD64, 5.6448 MHz for DSD128, or higher rates. Unlike WAV, FLAC, and MP3, DSD does not store conventional multibit PCM samples.

DSF files are used by audiophile music-download stores, DSD recording systems, compatible DAC software, and listeners who store high-resolution releases derived from Super Audio CD sources. A DSF file can contain stereo or multichannel audio, ID3 metadata, and embedded cover art, although support for tags and artwork varies between applications. Foobar2000 with its SACD Decoder component, JRiver Media Center, KORG AudioGate, and some professional audio systems can read DSF; many standard media players cannot.

What the MP3 format is

MP3 is a lossy MPEG audio format supported by most operating systems, web browsers, smartphones, tablets, car stereos, and portable players. It encodes audio from PCM input using perceptual compression, discarding information judged less audible to reduce file size.

For music, 256 or 320 kbps provides a high-quality listening copy. A LAME variable-bitrate setting such as V2 is a reasonable smaller alternative; 192 kbps reduces size further but can make compression artifacts more noticeable in complex or heavily transposed music. MP3 is suitable for portable playback and sharing, but it is not a replacement for the original DSD master or a lossless archive.

How to convert DSF to MP3

Using foobar2000

  1. Install foobar2000 and add the compatible SACD Decoder component, commonly distributed as foo_input_sacd. This component supplies DSF playback and DSD-to-PCM decoding.
  2. Add the .dsf files to a foobar2000 playlist.
  3. Open File → Preferences → Tools → SACD and set the output mode to PCM. Use a PCM sample rate of 44.1 or 48 kHz for MP3. MP3 encoders generally accept no more than 48 kHz, so 88.2 and 176.4 kHz are unsuitable output choices for this conversion.
  4. Select the files, right-click them, and choose Convert → Quick convert.
  5. Select an MP3 preset. If no MP3 encoder is configured, open Output format → Edit and configure a LAME encoder, then choose constant bitrate at 256 or 320 kbps or a high-quality variable-bitrate mode.
  6. Choose the destination folder and start the conversion. Foobar2000 decodes the DSD stream to PCM and passes that PCM audio to the MP3 encoder; creating a separate WAV file first is not necessary.

If the SACD Decoder does not appear, install the component in foobar2000's components directory and restart the program. The component architecture must match the foobar2000 installation, particularly when using a 64-bit installation.

Using 101convert.com

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Select the DSF-to-MP3 conversion, upload the DSF file, choose an available MP3 quality setting, start the conversion, and download the result. Do not upload private recordings or copyrighted material unless the service's file-handling terms permit it.

Quality and compatibility limits

DSF-to-MP3 conversion has two unavoidable stages: DSD is decimated and filtered into PCM, then the PCM is compressed with a lossy MP3 encoder. The result cannot preserve the full DSD signal or ultrasonic content, and repeated MP3 encoding can add further artifacts.

For most music, 44.1 kHz is a suitable intermediate rate for DSD64, while 48 kHz may be useful when the file will be used in video or a system standardized on 48 kHz. Higher DSD rates do not make the resulting MP3 higher quality; the MP3 bitrate and encoder settings have a much greater effect on the final file.

Keep the original DSF for preservation. If a smaller master is needed without additional lossy compression, export or convert it to a lossless PCM format such as FLAC instead. Check the converted files' artist, album, track-number, and cover-art tags because DSF readers and MP3 encoders do not handle all metadata consistently.

Frequently asked questions

Is the DSF to MP3 converter free?

Yes, converting DSF to MP3 on 101convert.com is completely free. No registration, email address or installation is required. If you need a higher file size limit or want to convert more files at once, see our plans.

How large can my DSF file be?

You can upload DSF files up to 1000 MB and convert up to 100 files at once in a single batch.

What happens to my uploaded files?

Files are processed automatically and deleted from our servers within a few minutes after conversion. We never view or share your files.

Do I need to install any software to convert DSF to MP3?

No. The DSF to MP3 conversion runs entirely online in your browser and works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone.

Did the conversion fail?

In most cases, the cause is an incorrect file format. Please upload a valid DSF file for this DSF to MP3 conversion. Occasionally, the issue may be on our side. We analyze recurring conversion failures and disable or fix the converter if we detect a defect.

Will converting DSF to MP3 reduce the sound quality?

Yes, DSF to MP3 is a lossy conversion, so some audio detail is discarded. The result depends on the MP3 bitrate and the quality of the conversion from DSD audio to PCM.

What happens to the high-resolution audio in a DSF file when it becomes MP3?

The DSD audio is converted to PCM and then compressed into the MP3 format. It will no longer retain the original DSF resolution, and converting the MP3 back to DSF cannot restore the lost detail.

Will my DSF metadata and album art transfer to MP3?

Common metadata may transfer, but some DSF tags, album art, or format-specific information may be missing or changed. MP3 uses its own tagging conventions, so the result may need its tags checked.

Why does my DSF to MP3 conversion fail or produce a silent file?

This can happen when the DSF uses a DSD rate or encoding variant that the converter cannot decode before creating PCM audio for MP3. Unsupported channel layouts or damaged DSF data can cause similar results.
