DVD recorders store television and camcorder recordings in VRO files, while phones, music players, and audio editors generally expect MP3. Converting extracts the recording’s audio track and re-encodes it into a smaller, widely supported audio file.

What the VRO format is

VRO is the DVD Video Recording container used mainly by DVD-RAM and DVD-RW recorders. A disc may store files such as VR_MOVIE.VRO in a DVD_RTAV folder. The file usually contains MPEG-2 program-stream data with one or more audio tracks, commonly Dolby Digital (AC-3), MPEG audio, or uncompressed LPCM, alongside video and DVD recording metadata.

VRO files are encountered after copying recordings from an older DVD recorder or finalizing footage recorded in VR mode. They are not audio-only files, so conversion to MP3 requires removing the video stream and encoding the selected audio stream.

What the MP3 format is

MP3 is a lossy compressed audio format supported by computers, phones, car stereos, media players, and most audio-editing applications. It produces much smaller files than LPCM and is usually more compatible than the original DVD audio stream.

MP3 is suitable for listening, sharing, podcast-style editing, and general archiving when preserving the exact source audio is not required. It is not ideal as a preservation master because encoding discards audio information.

How to actually convert VRO to MP3

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg can usually read a VRO program stream directly and extract its first audio stream:

ffmpeg -i "VR_MOVIE.VRO" -vn -map 0:a:0 -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 2 "recording.mp3"
  1. Copy the VRO file from the disc to a local drive. Do not convert directly from a removable disc if read errors or interruptions are likely.
  2. Install FFmpeg and open Command Prompt, PowerShell, Terminal, or another shell in the folder containing the file.
  3. Run the command, replacing the filenames with the actual source and destination names.
  4. Play the resulting MP3 and check that the beginning, end, and expected dialogue or music are present.

The option -vn discards video. -map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream, and -q:a 2 requests high-quality variable-bitrate MP3 encoding. For spoken recordings, -q:a 4 creates a smaller file; use a larger quality number only when reduced fidelity is acceptable.

To inspect available streams before converting, run:

ffprobe "VR_MOVIE.VRO"

If the file contains several audio streams, change the final stream index in -map 0:a:0 to -map 0:a:1, -map 0:a:2, and so on. This is useful when the disc contains multiple language tracks or audio modes.

Using the online converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software: upload the VRO file, choose MP3 as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting audio file. Uploading a recording transfers its contents to the service, so use desktop conversion instead for confidential material or files that must remain offline.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The conversion cannot restore quality already lost in the original recording. LPCM sources are converted from lossless audio to lossy MP3; AC-3 or MPEG audio sources are compressed again, which can introduce additional artifacts. Keep the original VRO file, or export a lossless WAV copy first, when long-term preservation matters.

Some recorders split a disc into several VRO files or store multiple programs in one file. FFmpeg may extract the complete stream as one MP3, while a DVD authoring application may be needed to identify and separate individual titles. Copy-protected or damaged discs can also prevent direct reading.
