What the VRO format is

VRO is a DVD-VR recording container used by standalone DVD recorders, DVD camcorders, and some television recording devices. A file such as VR_MOVIE.VRO usually contains MPEG-2 video plus one or more audio streams, commonly MPEG audio or Dolby Digital (AC-3).

VRO files are encountered when copying recordings from a rewritable DVD or a recorder's storage media. The format is not normally an audio-only format, so converting it to OGG means selecting and extracting an audio stream from the recording. VLC can often play VRO files, while FFmpeg is more suitable for controlled audio extraction.

What the OGG format is

OGG is a multimedia container most commonly used with Vorbis audio. It provides lossy compression, smaller files than uncompressed audio, and support in many desktop players, audio editors, and software projects. OGG Vorbis is useful when the target application specifically supports OGG or when reducing file size matters more than preserving every detail of the source.

OGG is not a codec by itself: an OGG file may contain Vorbis or another supported codec. The conversion command below creates OGG with the Vorbis codec.

How to actually convert VRO to OGG

FFmpeg is the most reliable desktop method because it can select an audio stream and discard the video. Install FFmpeg, place the VRO file in an accessible folder, then inspect its streams:

ffprobe input.VRO

To extract the first audio stream and encode it as OGG Vorbis, run:

ffmpeg -i input.VRO -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.ogg

-map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream, -vn prevents video from being copied, and -q:a 5 uses a variable-quality Vorbis setting that is suitable for general listening. Use a different stream index, such as 0:a:1, if ffprobe shows the desired audio as the second stream.

For a smaller file, use -q:a 3; for higher quality, use -q:a 7. The output extension should be .ogg, and the input and output filenames may be changed to match your files.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

The conversion is normally lossy twice: the VRO's original audio may already use compressed AC-3 or MPEG audio, and Vorbis encodes it again. Choose a higher quality setting when the source contains music or when later editing is expected; converting to a lossless format first cannot restore detail already lost in the VRO source.

Some DVD-VR recordings contain multiple audio streams, titles, or incomplete recording metadata. If FFmpeg cannot identify the input, copy the file from the disc again and try renaming only the extension to .MPG; do not alter the file contents. Protected or damaged discs may require the original recorder or lawful disc-authoring software before audio extraction is possible.

OGG Vorbis is not accepted by every phone, web browser, or hardware player. If the destination requires broad device compatibility, MP3 or AAC may be a more suitable target than OGG.
