Free online WV to OGG converter

A player, game engine, or sharing workflow may require an Ogg Vorbis file instead of WavPack. Converting a .wv file to .ogg also reduces storage and transfer size when lossless preservation is no longer required.

What the WV format is

WV is the usual extension for WavPack audio. WavPack is primarily a lossless codec: it compresses PCM audio without changing the decoded samples, usually producing smaller files than uncompressed WAV.

WavPack is used in lossless music archives, audiophile collections, and software such as the WavPack command-line tools, foobar2000, and dBpoweramp. A WavPack file can also use hybrid mode: its .wv file contains a lossy stream, while a matching .wvc correction file restores the original lossless audio.

Keep a hybrid pair's .wv and .wvc files in the same folder. A .wv file without its correction file may decode only to the lossy hybrid version.

What an Ogg file contains

Ogg is a media container, not one audio codec. Files with the .ogg extension are most commonly encoded with Vorbis; Ogg can also carry Opus and other codecs.

Ogg Vorbis is lossy and commonly used where smaller audio files are preferable to lossless source preservation. It is supported by VLC, foobar2000, many Linux applications, browsers, and many game engines, but support on car stereos, smart speakers, and older portable devices is less consistent than MP3 or AAC.

Convert the audio

To convert on 101convert.com without installing software, upload the .wv file, select OGG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. This normally creates an Ogg Vorbis file; check the requirements of the receiving program if it specifically requests Ogg Opus or another codec.

For local conversion, use an FFmpeg build that includes the libvorbis encoder:

Vorbis uses variable-bitrate quality settings. -q:a 6 is commonly near 192 kb/s for stereo material, although the actual bitrate depends on the audio; use -q:a 4 for smaller files or -q:a 8 for a higher bitrate.

For a hybrid WavPack source with a .wvc correction file, decode it locally with the WavPack tools before encoding so the correction data is used:

In foobar2000, add the WavPack file to a playlist, select it, then use File → Convert → …. Select an Ogg Vorbis preset, choose the quality setting and destination folder, then run the conversion.

Quality and compatibility limits

Converting lossless WavPack to Ogg Vorbis is lossy. Decoding the resulting .ogg file cannot recreate the original WavPack audio, so retain the .wv source for archiving, editing, or later conversion to another format.

If a hybrid .wv has no matching .wvc file, it is already lossy; encoding it to Vorbis adds another lossy generation. Avoid repeated transcoding between lossy formats.

Most title, artist, album, and track metadata can be transferred to Vorbis comments, but embedded artwork and uncommon tags may not survive every converter. Test one output file on the target device or application and verify its tags before batch-converting a library.
