TOD recordings often come from JVC Everio camcorders, while music players and audio editors commonly accept OGG instead. Converting a TOD file to OGG extracts its audio track and re-encodes it, so the resulting file no longer contains the original video.

What the TOD format is

TOD is a video container used mainly by JVC Everio high-definition camcorders. A TOD file usually contains MPEG-2 video with an audio stream such as AC-3 or MPEG audio, rather than being an audio-only format. You may encounter .tod files after copying recordings from an older JVC camcorder or its storage media.

Because TOD commonly contains video, an audio conversion must select an audio stream and discard the video stream. File extensions alone do not identify the exact audio codec; an application such as FFmpeg or MediaInfo can inspect the streams.

What the OGG format is

OGG is a multimedia container most commonly used with Vorbis audio. OGG Vorbis provides lossy compression, usually at substantially smaller sizes than uncompressed audio while retaining suitable quality for music, speech, and general playback.

OGG is useful when a media player, audio editor, game engine, or Linux application specifically supports Vorbis. It is less universally supported than MP3 or AAC, so check the target application's accepted formats before converting.

How to convert TOD to OGG

FFmpeg is the most direct desktop method because it can read the MPEG transport-stream structure used by many TOD files and select only the audio:

  1. Install FFmpeg from a trusted package source and confirm that the ffmpeg command is available.
  2. Open a terminal in the folder containing the recording.
  3. Run ffmpeg -i input.tod -vn -map 0:a:0 -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.ogg.

-vn disables video output, -map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream, and -q:a 5 requests a medium-high Vorbis quality level. Use a different input and output filename as needed; quote filenames containing spaces.

To list available streams before converting, run ffprobe input.tod. If the file contains multiple audio streams, change the map value, for example -map 0:a:1. To process every TOD file in a directory, run the command separately for each file or use a shell loop appropriate to your operating system.

You can also convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the TOD file, choose OGG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting audio file. Avoid this method for confidential recordings because the file must be transferred to a third-party service.

Quality and compatibility

This conversion normally involves lossy re-encoding: the source audio is decoded and then compressed as Vorbis. Increasing -q:a can improve quality and increase file size, but cannot restore detail already lost in the TOD recording. Use the original TOD file as the archive copy.

If FFmpeg reports that no audio stream exists, the file may be damaged, encrypted, or an unusual TOD variant. If the source contains AC-3 or another format that your FFmpeg build supports, FFmpeg will decode it before encoding Vorbis. OGG files may contain Vorbis or Opus; the command shown creates Vorbis for broader OGG-specific compatibility.
