A TOD recording may contain an audio track that must be extracted for use in an OPUS-only player, messaging app, or archive. Converting it produces an audio-only file and removes the original TOD video stream.

What the TOD format is

TOD is a JVC Everio camcorder recording format based on an MPEG-2 transport stream. A TOD file normally contains video plus an audio stream, commonly MPEG audio, AC-3, or uncompressed PCM depending on the camera model and recording settings. You usually encounter .TOD files after copying recordings from older JVC Everio cameras; TOD is not generally a standalone audio format.

What the OPUS format is

OPUS is a lossy audio codec and container format designed for speech, music, streaming, and low-latency communication. It provides good quality at relatively low bitrates and is supported by current browsers, media players, VoIP applications, and many messaging platforms. OPUS cannot store the original TOD video, so the conversion keeps only a selected audio stream.

How to actually convert TOD to OPUS

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg can read the TOD transport stream, select its audio, and encode it with the Opus encoder.

  1. Install an FFmpeg build that includes libopus.
  2. Place the source file in an accessible folder and identify its name, for example recording.TOD.
  3. Run:
ffmpeg -i recording.TOD -map 0:a:0 -c:a libopus -b:a 128k recording.opus

-map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream and excludes the video. Use -b:a 64k for speech, 96k to 128k for general recordings, or 160k to 192k for music when file size is less important.

To inspect available streams before converting, run:

ffprobe recording.TOD

If the file contains more than one audio stream, replace 0:a:0 with the required stream index, such as 0:a:1. To preserve the original recording time as metadata where supported, add -map_metadata 0.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software: upload the TOD file, choose OPUS as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting audio file. Uploading is unsuitable for confidential recordings or files that exceed the service's size limits.

Quality and compatibility considerations

Because OPUS encoding is normally lossy, converting an already compressed TOD audio stream can reduce quality slightly. Use a higher bitrate when the source contains music; increasing the OPUS bitrate cannot restore detail that was lost in the original TOD stream.

A TOD file without an audio stream cannot produce a usable OPUS file. Very old or damaged recordings may also require a current FFmpeg build or prior repair because transport-stream timestamps and codec metadata can be incomplete. OPUS output contains audio only; retain the original TOD if the video, camera metadata, or exact source stream must be preserved.
