Programs and devices that support Opus may reject Yamaha mobile ringtone files in the MMF format. Converting MMF to Opus makes the audio usable in modern players, messaging systems, and applications that expect an Ogg Opus stream.

What the MMF format is

In the Audio category, MMF means Yamaha SMAF (Synthetic music Mobile Application Format). Yamaha designed SMAF for mobile-phone ringtones and alerts, and MMF files were commonly distributed for phones from the late 1990s and 2000s.

An MMF file may contain synthesized musical events, sampled audio, or both. Its contents can include ringtone-like sequences rather than one conventional PCM recording, so an MMF file is not always equivalent to a WAV or MP3 track. Yamaha SMAF authoring tools and mobile-phone ringtone software created these files; today they are most often found in old ringtone collections, firmware archives, and backups.

What the OPUS format is

Opus is a lossy audio codec normally stored in an Ogg container with the .opus extension. It supports speech, music, mono, stereo, and low-latency streaming at a wide range of bit rates.

Opus is useful for web audio, voice applications, messaging platforms, and local playback where a small file is preferred. It generally provides better quality than older low-bit-rate codecs at a similar file size, but it cannot restore detail that was absent from the original MMF audio.

How to actually convert MMF to OPUS

FFmpeg is the most practical desktop method when the installed build includes the Yamaha SMAF demuxer and the Opus encoder.

  1. Install a current FFmpeg build and place the MMF file in a convenient folder.
  2. Open a terminal or Command Prompt in that folder.
  3. Run ffmpeg -i input.mmf -vn -c:a libopus -b:a 64k output.opus.
  4. Replace input.mmf with the actual source filename. Use a higher rate such as 96k or 128k for music if the source contains enough detail.
  5. Test output.opus in an Opus-compatible player.

Use ffprobe input.mmf first if you need to inspect the detected streams. If the file contains several audio streams, select one explicitly, for example ffmpeg -i input.mmf -map 0:a:0 -c:a libopus -b:a 64k output.opus.

You can also convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software: select the MMF file, choose OPUS as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file when processing finishes.

If FFmpeg reports that the input format is unsupported, the MMF may use a SMAF variant or synthesizer data that the build cannot decode. Convert it first with software that supports Yamaha SMAF to WAV, then encode the WAV with ffmpeg -i intermediate.wav -c:a libopus -b:a 64k output.opus.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion renders an MMF sequence into ordinary audio; it does not preserve SMAF instruments, event data, ringtone controls, or phone-specific playback behavior. A synthesized MMF may sound different after rendering because the original phone supplied its own tone generator.

Use 32k–64k for short speech or simple alerts and 64k–128k for music. Re-encoding cannot improve a low-quality source, and very short files may gain little from Opus because container metadata adds overhead. Some older players accept only MP3, AAC, or WAV and will not open .opus files.
