A device or application that accepts Ogg Opus audio may require the audio track to be extracted from an OGM file first. Converting it produces a smaller, widely supported audio file for playback, sharing, or speech and music processing.

What the OGM format is

OGM, or Ogg Media, is an older container format that can hold audio, video, subtitles, and metadata. OGM files commonly contain Vorbis audio alongside video and were frequently created with VirtualDubMod and older Ogg-based media tools; they are often encountered in archived video releases and legacy media collections.

The .ogm extension identifies the container, not necessarily the audio codec. Use FFmpeg's ffprobe input.ogm command to inspect available audio streams before converting.

What the OPUS format is

Opus is a lossy audio codec normally stored in an Ogg Opus file with the .opus extension. It is designed for both speech and music, supports low latency, and provides good quality at relatively low bitrates for voice calls, streaming, podcasts, and general playback.

OPUS is preferable when the target application supports it and file size matters. It is not universally accepted by older hardware players or editing software, which may require MP3, AAC, WAV, or another format.

How to convert OGM to OPUS

Using FFmpeg

  1. Install FFmpeg and confirm that the OGM file contains an audio stream with ffprobe input.ogm.
  2. Convert the first audio stream and discard video with:

ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a libopus -b:a 96k output.opus

The -map 0:a:0 option selects the first audio stream, -vn prevents video from being copied, and -b:a 96k sets the Opus bitrate. Use -map 0:a:1 or another index if the required language or commentary track is not the first one.

For speech, try -b:a 32k to 64k; for music, 96k to 128k is a common starting range. If FFmpeg reports that the Opus encoder is unavailable, use a build with libopus support.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software: upload the OGM file, select OPUS as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. The available audio tracks and bitrate controls depend on the converter's interface.

Quality and compatibility considerations

Converting an already compressed Vorbis or other lossy audio track to Opus re-encodes it and can introduce additional quality loss. Keep the original OGM and choose a moderate bitrate rather than trying to restore quality that was removed during the first encode.

If the OGM contains several audio tracks, verify the selected stream with ffprobe. Some older OGM files use codecs or stream layouts that modern players handle inconsistently; FFmpeg can often decode them, but a damaged or unsupported stream may need to be extracted or repaired before encoding.
