WTV recordings often contain television audio that is difficult to use outside Windows Media Center. Converting the selected audio stream to OPUS produces a smaller file for web playback, messaging, speech storage, or applications that require the Ogg Opus format.

What the WTV format is

WTV, or Windows Recorded TV, is a container created primarily by Windows Media Center in Windows Vista and later. It stores recorded digital television programs together with video, one or more audio streams, captions, program metadata, and sometimes copy-protection information.

The audio inside a WTV file is commonly AAC or AC-3, depending on the broadcast source and recording hardware. WTV is therefore a television-recording container rather than an audio codec; converting it to OPUS normally means extracting an audio stream and re-encoding it.

What the OPUS format is

OPUS is a lossy audio codec usually stored in an Ogg container with the .opus extension. It supports speech and music from very low bitrates through high-quality stereo and multichannel encoding.

OPUS is suitable for web applications, voice recordings, podcasts, messaging, and bandwidth-limited playback. It generally provides better quality than older speech codecs at the same bitrate, but some older hardware and media software cannot play it. It is not appropriate as a lossless archive format.

How to convert WTV to OPUS

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg can usually read WTV containers and select an audio stream without encoding the video. Install a current FFmpeg build, open a terminal in the folder containing the recording, and run:

ffmpeg -i "recording.wtv" -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a libopus -b:a 128k "recording.opus"

  • -map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream.
  • -vn prevents video from being copied into the output.
  • -c:a libopus encodes the audio with the Opus codec.
  • -b:a 128k sets the target bitrate; it is a practical starting point for stereo television audio.

To inspect available streams first, run ffmpeg -i "recording.wtv". If the desired language or commentary track is listed as another audio stream, change the mapping, for example -map 0:a:1. Add -ac 2 when a stereo file is required from a multichannel broadcast:

ffmpeg -i "recording.wtv" -map 0:a:0 -vn -ac 2 -c:a libopus -b:a 128k "recording.opus"

Using the online converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software: select WTV as the input format, choose OPUS as the output format, upload the recording, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Large television recordings may take longer to upload than a locally processed file.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Because broadcast audio is usually already compressed, converting it to OPUS is a lossy re-encode. Use the original WTV or an extracted original audio stream for archival purposes; use OPUS for distribution or playback efficiency.

For spoken programs, 32–64 kbps is often sufficient. Use approximately 96–128 kbps for stereo music or general television audio. Increasing the bitrate cannot restore quality lost in the broadcast source.

A WTV file may contain several audio tracks, and selecting the first stream can produce the wrong language or commentary channel. Confirm the stream mapping before conversion. DRM-protected recordings may not be readable or decryptable by FFmpeg, and conversion will not bypass that protection.
