MTM is a module music format used mainly in the MultiTracker era on DOS systems. It stores sampled instruments, patterns, and playback instructions rather than a finished audio recording. MTM files were popular with demoscene musicians and tracker users who wanted compact, editable music files with relatively small size compared with full audio.

Because MTM is a tracker module, it is typically opened in compatible tracker players or converted to standard audio for modern playback. It is not a common consumer audio format, so direct support in everyday media players is limited.

Opus is a modern, highly efficient lossy audio codec designed for speech and music alike. It offers excellent quality at low bitrates, low latency, and broad support in modern software and devices. Opus is commonly used for streaming, voice chat, web audio, and archival distribution where small file size and strong quality are important.

Compared with tracker modules, Opus is a finished audio format: it contains the rendered sound, not editable patterns or instruments. That makes it ideal for playback compatibility, but it does not preserve the original tracker structure.

How to perform the conversion

The most reliable way to convert MTM to Opus is to first render the module to audio, then encode that audio as Opus. A practical desktop workflow is:

1. Open the .mtm file in a tracker player or module-capable audio tool that can export or render to WAV, such as OpenMPT or VLC with module playback support.
2. Export or record the playback to a lossless intermediate file such as .wav.
3. Encode the WAV file to Opus using FFmpeg.

Example FFmpeg command:

If your player can open MTM directly and save audio, use its export function, for example File → Export → WAV or File → Render to audio, then convert the exported WAV to Opus with FFmpeg.

Notes on quality and limitations

MTM to Opus is a lossy workflow because the source is rendered into audio and then compressed again. The original tracker data, instrument settings, and pattern structure are not preserved in the Opus file.

For best quality, render the MTM at the correct sample rate and avoid unnecessary resampling or normalization before encoding. A bitrate between 96 kbps and 160 kbps is usually sufficient for tracker music, though higher bitrates may be preferable for complex mixes.

Compatibility is generally excellent for Opus in modern players, but some older hardware and legacy software may not support it. If maximum compatibility is required, consider keeping a WAV or FLAC copy alongside the Opus version.
