SHN stands for Shorten, an older lossless audio compression format. It was widely used in the early days of digital music sharing, especially for live concert recordings and archival audio collections. SHN files preserve the original audio data exactly, so they are suitable when audio quality must not change. However, SHN is now considered a legacy format and is not supported by many modern players and editors.

Target format: OPUS

OPUS is a modern lossy audio codec designed for speech and music alike. It offers excellent quality at low bitrates, low latency, and broad support in browsers, messaging apps, and many media players. OPUS is commonly used for streaming, VoIP, podcasts, and efficient music distribution. Compared with SHN, OPUS files are usually much smaller, but the conversion is not lossless because audio is re-encoded.

How to perform the conversion

The best practical workflow is to decode SHN to WAV or FLAC first, then encode to OPUS. This is because SHN is a lossless source, while OPUS requires a fresh encode.

Option 1: Using FFmpeg

1. Install FFmpeg on your computer.
2. Open a terminal or command prompt in the folder containing the SHN file.
3. Run a command such as ffmpeg -i input.shn -c:a libopus -b:a 128k output.opus.
4. Adjust the bitrate if needed: 96k for smaller files, 160k or 192k for higher quality music.

If FFmpeg does not read the SHN file directly, first convert it to WAV with a Shorten-capable tool, then encode that WAV to OPUS with FFmpeg.

Option 2: Using Audacity plus FFmpeg

1. Open the SHN file in Audacity if your build supports it, or import the decoded WAV version.
2. Check the audio for any issues such as clipping or gaps.
3. Choose File → Export → Export Audio.
4. Select Opus as the output format if available, or export to WAV and encode with FFmpeg afterward.

Notes on quality, compatibility, and limitations

SHN is lossless, but OPUS is lossy, so the conversion permanently reduces audio fidelity even though the source is preserved during decoding. For archival purposes, keep the original SHN or convert it to FLAC as a lossless master and create OPUS only for playback or sharing.

Some SHN files may contain multiple tracks or be part of a concert set, so metadata and track splitting may need manual attention before encoding. Also, OPUS support is excellent in modern software, but not every hardware player or older media device can play it. If compatibility is critical, consider whether MP3 or AAC is needed instead.
