TRP recordings from television receivers and DVR software may not play in applications that accept only Ogg Opus audio. Converting the contained audio stream to .opus produces a smaller, shareable file for modern playback, voice, and streaming software.

What the TRP format is

In the Audio category, TRP usually refers to an MPEG transport-stream recording saved with a .trp extension. Digital TV receivers, set-top boxes, DVRs, and some capture applications create these files. A TRP file commonly contains video plus one or more audio streams, such as AAC, AC-3, or MPEG audio; it is usually a container rather than a standalone audio codec.

Some TRP recordings are encrypted, incomplete, or produced with device-specific variations. The extension alone does not identify the available audio codec, language, channel layout, or sampling rate.

What the OPUS format is

Opus is a lossy audio codec normally stored in an Ogg container with the .opus extension. It supports mono, stereo, and multichannel audio, variable bitrates, and sample rates suitable for speech or music. Opus generally provides good quality at lower bitrates than MP3, making it useful for web playback, messaging, voice applications, and compact archives.

Use OPUS when the destination application supports it and reduced file size matters. Older hardware, some editing programs, and certain media players may require MP3, AAC, or WAV instead.

How to convert TRP to OPUS

FFmpeg is the most reliable desktop method because it can inspect the transport stream, select a particular audio track, and encode directly to Opus.

  1. Install FFmpeg from a trusted desktop package or distribution repository.
  2. Inspect the audio streams with ffprobe -v error -select_streams a -show_entries stream=index,codec_name,channels,sample_rate -of default=noprint_wrappers=1 input.trp. Note the stream index and codec.
  3. Convert the first audio stream with ffmpeg -i input.trp -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a libopus -b:a 96k output.opus. The -vn option discards video, while -map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream.
  4. For music or stereo program audio, use -b:a 128k or -b:a 160k. For speech, -b:a 32k to 64k is often sufficient.
  5. To select a different audio stream, change the map value, for example -map 0:a:1. Add -ac 2 if the target application does not accept multichannel Opus.

For a no-install option, the built-in converter at 101convert.com can convert the file online for free. Uploading is unsuitable for confidential recordings, and very large TRP files may exceed a service's size or processing limits.

Quality and compatibility

This is normally a lossy-to-lossy conversion: decoding AAC, AC-3, or another compressed TRP audio stream and encoding it as Opus cannot restore discarded detail. Keep the original TRP file if it is an archival source. The selected bitrate, channel count, and audio track determine the result more than the filename extension.

If FFmpeg reports that no audio stream exists, the TRP may contain only video, use unsupported encryption, or be damaged. A file that contains several broadcasts or language tracks requires explicit stream selection; otherwise FFmpeg may convert the first track rather than the desired one.
