A TRP recording may contain an audio stream that another player or editor cannot open directly, so extracting it as FLAC provides a standard, lossless audio file. This is useful for archiving or editing the audio separately from the original broadcast or DVR transport stream.

What the TRP format is

In the Audio category, TRP usually refers to a transport-stream recording saved with a .trp extension. HDTV receivers, DVRs, set-top boxes, and some capture applications create these files. A TRP file commonly contains video plus one or more audio streams encoded as AAC, AC-3, MPEG audio, or another codec; it is a container rather than a specific audio codec.

Some devices split long recordings into several TRP files or add device-specific metadata. Playback and extraction therefore depend on the exact transport-stream structure.

What the FLAC format is

FLAC is a lossless audio codec. It reduces PCM audio size without discarding samples, supports metadata such as artist and album tags, and is supported by many desktop players, media servers, and audio editors.

FLAC is suitable when you need an editable or archival audio file and want to avoid another generation of lossy compression. It does not preserve video, subtitles, broadcast metadata, or the original compressed bitstream.

How to convert TRP to FLAC

FFmpeg is the most dependable desktop tool for this conversion because it can read transport streams and decode common broadcast audio codecs.

  1. Install FFmpeg and make a copy of the original TRP file.
  2. List the streams to identify the audio track with ffprobe input.trp, or simply inspect the stream list printed by FFmpeg.
  3. Extract the first audio stream with ffmpeg -i input.trp -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a flac output.flac. Replace input.trp and output.flac with the required filenames.
  4. If the file contains several audio streams, change 0:a:0 to 0:a:1, 0:a:2, and so on, and write each result to a separate FLAC file.

The -map option selects a specific audio stream, -vn excludes video, and -c:a flac encodes the decoded samples as FLAC. To preserve the source sample rate and channel layout, do not add resampling or channel-mixing options.

You can also use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the TRP file, select FLAC as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file when processing finishes.

Quality and compatibility limits

FLAC encoding is lossless only from the decoded input. If the TRP contains AAC, AC-3, or MPEG audio, that original codec may already be lossy; converting it to FLAC cannot restore discarded detail and usually produces a larger file than the source audio stream.

A TRP file may contain encrypted, damaged, or device-proprietary streams that FFmpeg cannot decode. If no audio stream is detected, the file may contain video only, use unsupported encryption, or require the recorder's companion software. Verify the output by opening output.flac in a player and checking its duration, channels, and sample rate.
