A TREC file is usually a Camtasia screen recording, while FLAC stores audio only. Convert it when you need the recording’s soundtrack in an audio editor or want lossless compressed audio archiving; the screen video will not be included.

What the TREC format is

TREC is TechSmith’s proprietary recording format used by Camtasia Recorder and Camtasia. A TREC file can contain captured screen video, webcam footage, microphone audio, system audio, cursor data, and recording metadata. You typically encounter it after recording a presentation, software demonstration, lecture, or support session with Camtasia.

TREC is not a standard audio format, and many general-purpose players and command-line converters cannot decode it directly. The usable audio must normally be extracted through Camtasia or a converter that supports TREC.

What the FLAC format is

FLAC is a lossless audio codec stored in a .flac file. It reduces file size without discarding audio data, supports common sample rates and bit depths, and is supported by many audio players, editors, media servers, and archival tools.

FLAC is suitable when you need to edit or preserve the audio track without an additional lossy-compression step. It cannot store TREC’s screen video, webcam stream, cursor information, or Camtasia timeline data.

How to convert TREC to FLAC

Using Camtasia and FFmpeg

1. Open the TREC file in Camtasia and confirm that the required microphone or system-audio tracks are present.
2. Remove or mute unwanted tracks if the recording contains separate audio sources.
3. Use Camtasia’s audio-only export command, usually Export/Share → Audio only. Select WAV or another uncompressed PCM output when the option is available.
4. Convert the extracted WAV file with FFmpeg:

ffmpeg -i recording.wav -c:a flac -compression_level 5 recording.flac

The compression level changes encoding speed and file size, not audio quality. Use the original sample rate and bit depth from the WAV export unless your editing workflow requires different settings.
