What the TREC format is

TREC is TechSmith's recording container used by Camtasia for screen captures, webcam footage, microphone audio, and system audio. Camtasia creates TREC files during recording and normally places them in a project's media library or recording folder. The container may include video and multiple audio sources, so converting it to AAC extracts audio rather than preserving the screen recording.

What the AAC format is

AAC is a lossy audio codec commonly stored as a raw .aac file or inside an .m4a container. It generally provides better quality than MP3 at similar bitrates and is supported by smartphones, browsers, streaming platforms, and most current media players. Use AAC when the destination accepts AAC audio or when you want a smaller audio-only file; use an M4A output if the target application does not handle raw AAC files reliably.

How to convert TREC to AAC

The built-in converter at 101convert.com can process the file online for free without installing software. Upload the .trec file, select AAC as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting audio file. This is suitable when the recording opens successfully and contains an audio stream.

For local conversion, FFmpeg can extract and encode the audio:

• -i input.trec selects the source recording.
• -vn discards the screen and webcam video.
• -c:a aac encodes the extracted audio with the AAC codec.
• -b:a 192k sets a general-purpose stereo bitrate; use 128k for smaller speech files or 256k for higher-quality music and mixed audio.

For broader playback compatibility, create an M4A file containing AAC instead of a raw AAC stream:

ffmpeg -i input.trec -vn -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a

If FFmpeg reports that the TREC container is unsupported, open the recording in Camtasia and export it first through Share → Local File as an MP4. Then extract the audio from that MP4 with the same FFmpeg command, replacing input.trec with exported.mp4.

Quality and compatibility limitations

AAC conversion cannot restore audio detail that was absent from the TREC recording. Re-encoding an existing compressed audio stream introduces another lossy step, so use the highest-quality available source and avoid repeated conversions. TREC files with separate microphone and system-audio tracks may be mixed into one AAC track during export; Camtasia's audio-mixing settings determine the result. Raw .aac files have less metadata and application support than .m4a, so choose M4A when the receiving program accepts containers rather than codec-only files.
