Some phones, editors, and media players accept AAC only inside an MPEG-4 container such as M4A, while an ADTS file is a raw AAC stream with transport headers. Converting it usually means repackaging the existing AAC audio rather than encoding it again.

What the ADTS format is

ADTS (Audio Data Transport Stream) stores AAC audio as a sequence of independently framed packets. Each frame contains headers describing properties such as the profile, sample rate, channel configuration, and frame length.

ADTS commonly uses the .aac extension and appears in AAC encoder output, broadcast or streaming captures, FFmpeg workflows, and MPEG audio pipelines. It is useful for streaming because a decoder can begin at individual frames, but it provides limited container metadata and is less suitable for editing libraries than an MP4-based file.

What the AAC format is

AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is the audio codec contained in an ADTS stream; it is not, by itself, a separate container format. AAC is a lossy codec used in MPEG-4 video, M4A music files, podcasts, broadcast systems, phones, and web media.

When a program asks for an “AAC file,” it may mean raw AAC with ADTS framing or AAC audio inside an .m4a or .mp4 container. M4A is usually the more compatible delivery format because it can store duration, metadata, cover art, and chapter information.

How to actually convert ADTS to AAC

For a no-installation conversion, upload the file to 101convert.com, choose AAC or M4A as the output format, select the audio settings if offered, and download the result. The service is free to use.

For local conversion, FFmpeg can copy the AAC frames into an M4A container without re-encoding:

ffmpeg -i input.aac -c:a copy -bsf:a aac_adtstoasc output.m4a

Replace input.aac with the actual ADTS filename. The aac_adtstoasc bitstream filter removes ADTS transport headers and prepares the AAC stream for the MPEG-4 container. FFmpeg normally selects the required conversion when writing M4A, but specifying the filter makes the operation explicit.

If the destination program requires a new encoded stream rather than a container change, transcode it with a chosen bitrate:

ffmpeg -i input.aac -c:a aac -b:a 128k output.m4a

Use File → Open in an audio editor that supports ADTS, then choose File → Export and select AAC or M4A if you prefer a graphical workflow. Export labels differ between applications; verify whether “AAC” means an ADTS file or AAC inside an MP4 container.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

The stream-copy command preserves the original AAC quality because it does not decode or re-encode the audio. Transcoding with -c:a aac introduces another lossy-generation step; use it only when the target software rejects the original profile, sample rate, channel layout, or container.

Choose a bitrate appropriate to the source: encoding a low-bitrate ADTS file at a higher bitrate cannot restore lost detail. Common stereo speech or music exports use 96–160 kbps, while higher-quality music exports may use 192–256 kbps.

ADTS files may lack reliable duration and metadata. Repackaging can improve duration reporting, but it cannot recreate tags, artwork, or chapters that were never present. Some AAC profiles, including HE-AAC variants, have narrower hardware and editor support; if playback fails after repackaging, check the source profile and consider transcoding to AAC-LC.
