What the 3PG format is

A .3pg file is generally a 3GPP mobile-media container, closely associated with the more common .3gp extension. Older mobile phones and recording applications created these files for compact video or audio recordings. The container may hold an AMR, AAC, or another supported audio stream, and can also contain video.

VLC, FFmpeg, QuickTime-based applications, and some mobile-media utilities can read 3GPP files. File extensions are sometimes misspelled or renamed, so a file labeled .3pg may be recognized internally as 3GP.

What the AAC format is

AAC is a lossy audio codec designed to provide better quality than older codecs such as MP3 at comparable bit rates. It is supported by phones, browsers, music applications, media players, and many editing programs.

A raw AAC file normally uses the .aac extension and stores AAC frames in an ADTS stream. An AAC track can also be stored in an MPEG-4 container such as .m4a; choose .aac when the receiving application specifically requires a raw AAC file.

How to convert 3PG to AAC

Using the built-in online converter

This option requires no software installation. Do not upload recordings containing confidential or sensitive information unless the service's handling and retention terms are acceptable.

Using FFmpeg on a computer

FFmpeg is suitable when the file contains video, when batch conversion is needed, or when exact audio settings must be controlled. Run:

ffmpeg -i input.3pg -vn -c:a aac -b:a 128k output.aac

The -vn option discards video, -c:a aac encodes the audio with AAC, and -b:a 128k sets the audio bit rate. Replace input.3pg with the actual filename and select a higher or lower bit rate as required.

If the source already contains AAC and FFmpeg reports that the stream can be copied, extraction without another lossy encode may be possible:

ffmpeg -i input.3pg -vn -c:a copy output.aac

Use stream copying only when the output is accepted by the target application; otherwise, re-encode with the first command.

Quality and compatibility considerations

Conversion cannot improve a low-quality source. Audio recorded with AMR or a low bit rate may contain speech-bandwidth limits or compression artifacts that remain after encoding to AAC. Re-encoding an existing AAC track causes another generation of lossy compression, so stream copying is preferable when compatible.

A 3PG file may contain no audio track, or its audio codec may be unsupported by a particular program. FFmpeg will report this during conversion. For broad compatibility, 128k AAC is suitable for speech and ordinary music; use 192k or higher when the source has sufficient quality and the recipient accepts larger files.
