Legacy recordings in .snd format may be unusable in phones, media players, or editors that expect AAC audio. Converting them creates a smaller, more widely supported file for playback, sharing, or import while retaining the original for archival use.

What the SND format is

.snd is an ambiguous audio filename extension. It commonly identifies NeXT/Sun sound files, also called AU files, which can contain PCM or compressed audio, but it is also used by older Macintosh programs, games, Unix workstations, and application-specific sound tools.

The extension does not identify the codec, sample rate, channel count, or container structure. Inspect the file before converting it; FFmpeg can recognize many SND variants, although proprietary or damaged files may require the software that created them.

What the AAC format is

AAC is a lossy audio codec that generally provides better quality than MP3 at comparable bitrates. It is commonly used by smartphones, media players, streaming systems, browsers, and video editors. Apple devices usually store AAC audio in an .m4a file, which is an MP4 container rather than a separate codec.

Use an AAC bitrate appropriate to the source and destination: 128–192 kbps is typical for stereo music, while speech can often use 64–96 kbps. AAC cannot restore detail already missing from the SND source.

3. For AAC in an M4A container, run ffmpeg -i "input.snd" -c:a aac -b:a 192k "output.m4a".
4. For an AAC bitstream with ADTS framing, run ffmpeg -i "input.snd" -c:a aac -b:a 192k -f adts "output.aac". Use this only when the receiving software specifically requires raw AAC.

FFmpeg normally preserves the detected sample rate and channel layout. Add options such as -ar 44100 or -ac 2 only when the destination requires a particular sample rate or channel count. If FFmpeg reports an unknown or invalid format, the file may use a proprietary SND variant, have an incompatible header, or be damaged.

Quality and compatibility limits

Encoding an already compressed SND recording as AAC adds another lossy-generation step. Keep the original SND file, and avoid repeated conversions between lossy formats.

.m4a and .aac are not interchangeable labels: M4A is a container that can hold AAC, while an AAC file commonly uses ADTS framing. Some programs accept only one of these forms, so use the extension and container required by the destination rather than renaming the file.
