Sony OpenMG files commonly contain ATRAC audio that older SonicStage libraries or devices cannot use in modern players. Converting an unprotected file to AAC makes it compatible with phones, browsers, and current media applications while reducing its size.

What the OMG format is

.omg is an audio file associated with Sony OpenMG and SonicStage. It normally stores ATRAC3 or ATRAC3plus audio and may include OpenMG digital rights management (DRM). You may encounter OMG files in libraries created for Sony Network Walkman players, MiniDisc-related software, and older Sony music-management applications.

OMG is not a general-purpose audio container, and many current players, editors, and converters cannot decode it directly. A file downloaded or transferred under OpenMG protection may be restricted to playback inside the software or on authorized hardware.

What the AAC format is

AAC is a lossy audio codec commonly stored in .m4a, .mp4, or sometimes .aac files. Phones, web browsers, streaming platforms, car systems, and most desktop media players support it.

AAC usually provides better perceived quality than MP3 at the same bitrate. Typical settings are 128–192 kbps for ordinary stereo music and 256 kbps when retaining more detail matters. AAC cannot restore quality already lost in the original ATRAC encoding.

How to actually convert OMG to AAC

Using 101convert

  1. Open the OMG-to-AAC converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Select an unprotected .omg file.
  3. Choose AAC as the output format; use .m4a if the destination device expects an MPEG-4 audio file.
  4. Select a bitrate such as 192 kbps, start the conversion, and download the resulting file.

Online conversion may reject OpenMG files because decoding is proprietary or because the file is DRM-protected. Do not upload copyrighted or private recordings unless the service and your rights permit it.

Using SonicStage and an audio encoder

For an OMG library that SonicStage can play, first use the original Sony software to create a standard, unprotected audio file:

  1. Open the library in SonicStage and confirm that the track plays normally.
  2. Use Tools → Options → Transfer or the library’s export or conversion command, if available, and choose WAV or another unprotected format. Menu names vary between SonicStage releases.
  3. Convert the exported WAV with an AAC-capable encoder such as FFmpeg:

ffmpeg -i input.wav -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a

For a lossless intermediate, use WAV or FLAC; avoid converting first to MP3 because that adds another lossy stage. If SonicStage offers AAC output directly, select AAC in its export settings instead of creating an intermediate file.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

DRM-protected OpenMG files generally cannot be converted by ordinary command-line tools, and changing the filename extension does not remove the protection. Use an authorized SonicStage playback or export function, or recreate the recording from an original CD or other lawful source; do not attempt to bypass DRM.

FFmpeg normally does not decode .omg directly, so this command works only after SonicStage or another compatible decoder has produced WAV, PCM, or another readable input. Keep the original OMG files until the AAC files have been checked for complete playback, correct tags, and the expected sample rate and channel count.
