A program or device that accepts AAC audio may require the audio track to be extracted from an M2T recording first. Conversion also reduces a camera transport stream to a much smaller, audio-only file for playback, sharing, or editing.

What the M2T format is

M2T is usually an MPEG-2 transport stream saved with an .m2t extension. HDV camcorders and video capture software commonly create M2T files containing MPEG-2 video plus an audio stream, typically MPEG-1 Layer II audio or uncompressed PCM. Because M2T is normally a video container, converting it to AAC means extracting and encoding its audio track; it does not convert video data into sound.

What the AAC format is

AAC, or Advanced Audio Coding, is a lossy audio codec used in phones, media players, streaming services, and applications that need smaller files than uncompressed PCM. At comparable bit rates, AAC generally provides better compression than MP3. A file ending in .aac commonly contains AAC frames in an ADTS stream; some software instead stores AAC inside an MPEG-4 audio container with an .m4a extension.

How to convert M2T to AAC

You can convert the file on the 101convert.com website for free without installing software. Upload the M2T file, choose AAC as the output format, select an audio bitrate if the converter provides that option, then start the conversion and download the resulting file.

For local conversion, FFmpeg handles M2T transport streams and lets you select the audio track explicitly:

  1. Install FFmpeg for your operating system and place the source file in an accessible folder.
  2. Run ffmpeg -i input.m2t -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.aac.
  3. Replace input.m2t with the source filename. The option -map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream, -vn excludes video, and -b:a 192k sets the AAC bitrate.

Use ffmpeg -i input.m2t without an output filename to inspect available streams. If the recording contains several audio tracks, change the final stream index in -map 0:a:0, such as -map 0:a:1. For stereo music or general speech, 128–192 kbps is usually sufficient; use 256 kbps when retaining more detail matters.

Quality and compatibility considerations

The conversion cannot restore detail already lost in the M2T source. Re-encoding MPEG audio or compressed camera audio to AAC introduces another lossy-generation step, while PCM sources avoid that specific loss but still undergo AAC compression.

Raw .aac files are less widely supported than .m4a files containing AAC. If the destination accepts MPEG-4 audio rather than raw AAC, use ffmpeg -i input.m2t -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a instead. The source may contain AC-3 or another codec; FFmpeg will decode it before encoding AAC, provided the required decoder is available.
