What the M2T format is
M2T is usually an MPEG-2 transport stream file, commonly produced by HDV camcorders and video capture systems. Video editors and ingest utilities may also export M2T files when preserving HDV footage. Although the extension identifies a transport stream rather than a dedicated audio format, an M2T file can contain MPEG audio, AC-3, or another supported audio stream alongside MPEG-2 video.
Because M2T is normally a video container, an audio conversion must select an audio stream instead of treating the entire file as audio. Files with no audio stream cannot be converted to FLAC.
What the FLAC format is
FLAC, or Free Lossless Audio Codec, compresses PCM audio without discarding samples. It produces smaller files than uncompressed WAV while preserving the decoded source exactly, making it suitable for editing masters, archival copies, music libraries, and applications that support lossless audio.
FLAC does not preserve M2T video, transport-stream structure, or the original compressed audio bitstream. It stores the audio after decoding, usually with tags such as artist, album, and title when usable metadata is available.
How to actually convert M2T to FLAC
FFmpeg is the most flexible desktop option because it can inspect the transport stream, select a particular audio track, and write FLAC directly.
- Install FFmpeg and place the M2T file in a convenient folder.
- Open a terminal or Command Prompt in that folder.
- Run
ffmpeg -i input.m2t -map 0:a:0 -c:a flac output.flac.
The option -map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream and prevents FFmpeg from attempting to include video. Replace input.m2t and output.flac with the actual filenames. To inspect available streams first, run ffmpeg -i input.m2t; additional audio tracks appear as entries such as Stream #0:1: Audio.
To convert a different audio stream, change the final stream index, for example -map 0:a:1. To retain readable metadata when the source provides it, use ffmpeg -i input.m2t -map 0:a:0 -map_metadata 0 -c:a flac output.flac.
You can also convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Select M2T as the input, FLAC as the output, upload the file, and download the resulting audio file after processing.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
FLAC conversion is lossless only relative to the decoded audio. If the M2T contains lossy MPEG or AC-3 audio, FLAC cannot restore information already removed during the original encoding; it only prevents another lossy compression step.
Use a high-quality source and verify the selected stream when a recording contains multiple audio tracks. Large M2T recordings can take time to scan, and damaged transport-stream sections may produce FFmpeg decoding warnings or gaps. FLAC is widely supported by audio players and editors, but some older hardware accepts WAV or MP3 instead and will require another conversion.
